Here's the deal. I've been offered a S&W M&P 45 ACP or a 5" Magnaported S&W 27 as trade on my Ruger GP 100. Which one do I trade for? What are they worth? What do you guys think???

I would prefer the model 27 myself. BUT, it all depends on the age and condition of said Model 27. If it is an old ragged out police trade in type gun then the M&P gets the Nod. If it's a newer Model 27 who knows?

How's that for help?

No matter how ragged, the 27 would be my nod. Blue can be replaced.

..27. 5" guns probably bring the biggest money of all the barrel lengths.

I'm leaning to the Model 27 as I've already got one plastic pistol (Glock). The 27 is top of the line. Well maybe except for a Python. The 27 will appreciate in value much better than the M&P.

To me, the Magnaporting does nothing except decrease the collector's value of the gun. It is a very common mod though and some may think it makes the gun more valuable. That said, it sounds like a wash, value-wise. It's all about which gun you would rather have. I'd value them at $500 each.

Cole, that's about what I was thinking. Magnaporting add nothing either to the performance or the resale value.

5" N-Frames are my favorite revolvers! A 25 Custom, 2 27s, a 624 Custom, and a 629 Classic. Like 'em all, well except the the 629 Classic.

Jeff, you got a 100 on that one. I've owned 3 - 629 transition revolvers. Recessed but not pinned, a 8 3/8 nickle 27 transition several 29's and a model 58. sold all of them. Boy was that a mistake. I'll be keeping all (well most all) future N frames. I will NOT buy those with that idiot lock however.

Not to insult Rugers, and I don't know the respective conditions, but if this is a straight up trade of a Model 27 for a GP100, that right there might tell you what that other guy thinks about what the magnaporting has added to the 27, namely decibels.

Or maybe I'm just way off on the relative values involved.

I'd grab that M27 and run for the door. Assuming the thing would still function, of course. E

Agree, magnaporting hurt the value immensely

I agree, Magnaporting hurts in more ways than one. A re-barrel can cure that. Still waiting to hear about the grips. Some folks seem to think Pachmyrs add value. The GP is 99%. I have it listed on Gunbroker. Also waiting on pictures (100 words) on the two respective trade candidates.

I personally like the 27 better than the Python, it's the top rung of the .357 world. The 5 inch 27 is a great gun, I have a 4" and I love it. Mag-na-port is a personal preference thing, I personally don't think the .357 kicks enough in an N frame to ever consider porting, but it floats some people's boat. I'd grab the 27 and giggle all the way home.

But first, why is he willing to swap a 27 for a GP 100? Not that there's anything wrong with a GP 100, they're great guns, but the 27 is clearly worth more. Anything wrong with the 27? Check the timing and really look that gun over.

He didn't specify a straight up trade. He may want some boot. He hasn't written back yet. "If a deal sounds too good to be true....."

Well fellas. It looks like the 27 trader has issues.
4" not 5" barrel.
Satin re-blue.
hogue grips.
$350 tops in my opinion.
Any other thoughts?

The S&W M&P is a darn good pistol if you don't want a revolver. Mine has been very reliable.
