Saw an announcement for a one-day shooting contest which will feature each of these three types of target shooting in equal thirds.
Trap Skeet 5-Stand.
That is, one-third of the targets will be trap, one-third will be skeet, and one-third will be 5-Stand targets
The interesting part is that the shooter will be limited to one shotgun for all three events (all targets) with no change in chokes allowed all day and must use the same ammo for all three events.
The winner will be the highest total number of broken targets during the whole day (which crosses all three types of targets equally).
This could be interesting.
Any thoughts as to the best gun / choke / ammo combination for this one-day shoot ?

I would use a skeet or sporting clays gun with a light modified choke. 1oz of #8's
If you can't hit the skeet targets with this - you need practice.
If you can't hit 16yd trap with this - you need practice.
Should be good enough for any sporting targets.
Sounds like fun.

I've shot an event like that twice. Most of us used a double barrel 12 ga., mine was choked improved and full. My loads were the Federal paper trap loads with #8 shot.

While not a gunwriter, I'd advise 1 1/8 oz loads of #8 or 9; all you need is a chip off that target to score it. If the trap is 16 yard the extra pellets may gain you a bird or 2. Same for skeet. 5 stand is the deciding factor; it depends on the course set for the day. Chokes I'd go for improved and modified unless the 5 stand has been set with those ridiculous 50 yard crossers. Let the 5 stand determine the chokes as the others are standardized. I expect it will won and lost on the 5 stand field.
Edit to add: 12 gauge O/U would be gun of choice.

Here's where a gun with two barrels would be nice. One in SK choke and the other in Modified choke.

Oldmodel is spot on IMO. This is the exact combo that I normally use in sporting clays. I've shot numerous rounds of trap and skeet with this combo too. If your on your on. Chokes give you inches and we normally miss in feet!

I would shoot the event with my Beretta 682 O/U with Briley skeet and and skeet II chokes installed.

Any gun that fits you. IC for choke, and Remington STS Light Target for the load. I've hit 60 yard targets with that combination. Not ideal for trap but you can get by, and IC will be near perfect for the other two. I'd enter that contest in a New York Minute.

Think the announcement was about a one-day shoot in Ohio held by the 16ga enthusiasts. Saturday, July 9th, 2011 Dillon Parks Land of Legends Shooting Center .

I would shoot 12ga of your choice (I use a Benelli M1 Super90), Choke if using double barrel then it would be Light Mod/Light Mod, If single barrel yup Light Mod, Gamebore WhiteGold 1oz #8. That will break targets out to 50 yards.
I have shot an all around but the one I did was a little different. It was 50 skeet, 50 trap, 50 sporting, and 25 flyers. It is a fun event, I wish more places would hold them.

So the 16 ga. Enthusiasts not gonna insist on everyone shooting 16 ga.?
I would pick a premium trap load of 1 1/8 oz. 7.5 or 8 shot in a 12 ga. choked IC if it's allowed.

What advantage does the 12 gauge have over a similar load in the 16 gauge ? .

For a given charge, the larger the barrel, the more efficient the shell. More shot in the effective pattern, all else equal (choke, hardness of shot, velocity, range).

It will be won by one of the good or great shots that are in attendance shooting the shotgun they are familiar with.
The winner will be the one who knows how to put the shot on the target. Choke(s) or shell used will mean little.

Not actual true, even the best can pick up a bird here and there with a little help from choke and or shot. Sometimes one bird is all that seperates HOA from runner up.
