Better yet, you've drawn a once in a lifetime coveted permit for Shiras moose, you've located a beast of the species - likely the largest living bull in the state, you watch him off and on during the summer, and locate him two days before the season opens and just sit there waiting. In the AM, opening day, your calling brings in not the bull, but coyotes... This is what I did.

I'm still going through more of the Sovada research. Quite interesting, and once the concept of mesopredator behavior around, due to predation by, coyotes is grasped the rest starts to make fairly good, logical sense. The numbers are intriguing, and it would be interesting to see similar research done in other areas/habitats far different than the pothole region to see what similarities there are to other, similar species in those areas.
No, coyotes won't pass up anything, but they are far more of an opportunistic predator/scavenger than anything else.

Coyotes never walk unless there is a shooter buck or bull in sight or I know one is close.
Same for wolves. (did I say that out loud?)

1. I now see the wisdom and merits of much older generations. 2. Technology makes things cheaper, easier, and less labor intensive, but not necessarily better.

I would let it walk. Why waste a good coyote skin by wrecking it with a deer rifle?

I wouldn't give a second thought. Especially with past experiences of having deer walk up on me while I was gutting one that I just shot. I don't think gun shots scare deer too much during regular season when they are accustomed to hearing them. However, you might want to get that dog out of there if you plan to sit in the same spot for awhile. That may spook them.
Keep your powder dry and stay frosty my friends.
