Hello all I am a long time viewer of this forum but I don't post much. This past weekend my dad and I had a couple tables set up at our local gun show and we saw a guy with a beautiful ruger #1 draped over his shoulder. I asked him what caliber it was and as soon as he told me 7x57 I knew I had to have it as I have never seen one in that caliber before. I did a little research and ran the serial number thru rugers website and found it was manufactured in the early 80's. It's in 98% condition. I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me anything about how uncommon a #1 in 7x57 might be.

They are relatively common and are still offered new in that chambering.

Mine was 1977 production and it had the very long throat that the Ruger 1 in that chambering were infamous for.

Had an International with gorgeous wood on both sides and a 6X Leupold on it. One of the most beautiful rifles I've ever owned. Traded it off, wish I had it back.

The .275 Rigby No.1 RSI was made for the Dallas Arms Collectors Assoc. It's serial# is a DACA-XXX. Supposed to been only 100 made.

Common enough that I can say with nearly 100% certainty that I will own one one of these days. The No. 1-A in 7x57 (now discontinued as previously mentioned) would be just about perfection in my book, but I'd take the RSI too in a heartbeat.

I would think Ruger would cycle that model/cartridge back into the catalog. Something that practical and sought after can't be ignored too long.

I have seen a used #1 on a used guns web site I regularly scroll through - listed at $1100 (with a scope from memory) - but condition is listed as good.
May be worth a look - provided the seller wants to ship it to my gunsmith for a check up ( I am prepered to pay the courier costs).

Very first centerfire rifle was a #1 in 7x57 and it took my first hog at about 200 yards.
My old load records show it had a loooooong throat and could fit 175g bullets way out the neck with room to spare. Chrographed slower than everything else so if interested in fps, get something else.
My 7x57 #1 was a joy to shoot! I practiced a lot so the first shot had to count...could'nt face the guide and say I missed!
With a scope, the loading port is somewhat covered on top by the scope overhang so you get good at loading from the side. It is not a long rifle so if I were to do it all over, I would place some sort of compact 6x scope on Rugers detatchable rings.
Mechanically it is interesting to play with, mine needed well known accurizing with attention to the forearm hanger fit to wood/barrel. Made it about a 1.5" moa rifle...fine for its weight. Preferred 154g,160g,170g or so loads - with 4350. Didn't have all the solid bullets then like now...would be interesting to see how they shoot.

I sure do like my CB 1A in 7x57. If'n you get it, I think you'll like it.
There is no accounting for taste.
Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.
Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however, Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

I currently have 3 red pad 7x57 #1's. RSI, 1A, and the hard to find 1B. The RSI is my primary deer rifle and have had some hunting success with it. The 1A and 1B haven't been to the range yet. Will be soon though!
