I have also killed hogs with several different calibers from the .22LR to the .338 win mag and on up to the .458 Win mag. However, my favorite hog killing caliber and rifle are in fact the Triple 4 Marlin 1895 model.
Yes, a .444 Marlin with a 265 grain Leverevolution bullet that will be good out to 200 yards. A lever gun is fast shouldering and that .444 makes a nice big hole putting a healthy amount of lead into the target. I have also used .325 grain hardcast bullets with a large metplate, they will travel from bow to stern on any hog.

I agree with bear, hogs are not all that tough, if hit in the right place. Go to http://www.texasboars.com/ and explore. I am not a fan of the smaller calibers ie 243 and down for hogs or deer for that matter, but in the right hands taking the right shots they are ok. I just think the 6.5s and up offer a little more assurance. Remember a pigs 'vitals' are much lower and forward of a deer's. if you can imagine a 1/2 gallon milk jug on it's side half way down the hog side. The back end needs to line up with the middle of the shoulder and it needs to go forward to a few inches behind and below the ear. I hope that this makes sense. Just remember shoot them lower and forward to where you would shoot a deer. My choice is a 7x57 using 150gns. capt david

No matter what you hear on the Internet hogs aren't that hard to kill . Agreed! As has been stated, use the gun and caliber that you shoot best. SHOT PLACEMENT IS EVERYTHING.

In my teens back in the 60's i worked at a packing plant and did the killing . I used a single shot 22 rifle with 22 shorts and killed a bunch of Hogs that weight 400 lbs plus and they dropped right there with one shot between the eyes. Bullet placement is the key more than the cal used.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

A Ruger Deerfield .44 carbine with a reflex type sight would be my dream hog gun. Wife took one of those with a 1.5-4.5 scope to Caryona 4 or 5 years ago on a NRA Women hunt. She shot a 300 pounder in the shoulder with a 270 Gold Dot and it dropped. Said the guide was quite surprised; both with the rifle and with her shot.

i didn't shoot anything with the 223. my brother shot a hog with his 30-30 but it ran off. poor shot placement the hog was running and he's not the best shot to begin with.

Just about everything is a hog cartridge as long as you use a sensible bullet choice. I have killed them with most cartridges between .223 to .460 Weatherby. All worked.

A leveraction marlin in 30-30, 44mg, 45lc, 35rem, 444, 45/70, 450m, 308/338mx. A good peep/ghost ring or low powered scope. Good bullets, good placement, good pork to eat!

I opt for the same thing I use to shoot everything else with in short range close cover situations.
35 Whelen, 2X scope, 250 gr. CoreLokts. (Ruger 77)

anything from 223 rem to 45-70 personally I have used my 250 Savage model 99. light, fast, short, open sites. fast on target.
1. I now see the wisdom and merits of much older generations. 2. Technology makes things cheaper, easier, and less labor intensive, but not necessarily better.

Any of the below should be sufficient.... Why use a marginal cartridge? Mr Browning's big 50 is the way to go...
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.
