I hope i am in the right place. I have a custom 204 with a Benchmark barrel on it. Remington action. I was given 100 rounds of Hornady brass, I resized the brass but the brass will not fit in my chamber. the question how can I bump the sholder back so it will fit in my Benchmark barrel. Any thoughs would be helpful.

Tom, Apparently used once fired brass?? If so I would trade it off or give it away to someone with a chamber it will fit in when FL sized. I have had the same experience with a chamber or two over the years but only with brass fired in another chamber. Buy 100 rounds of new brass and neck size it and go shoot it.

If the size difference is minor and you only need to bump it a little bit, you may be able to get there by shaving a bit from the top face of the shell holder - allowing the case to project further into the die when the shell holder bottoms the die. Knew of one fellow who shaved a bit from the bottom of the die, but I would rather alter a shell holder. Try it a couple thousands or so at a whack - might get you to where you want to be.

First question is whether the case length or diameter is the problem.
When I had Iver Henriksen build my .35 Whelen (1956'57), I specified "minimum chamber." (He'd asked.)
Regular RCBS dies wouldn't size once-fired FA 57 brass down small enough to chamber. Factory .30-06 ammo chambered all right. So I pulled a bunch of .30-06 bullets, fire-formed several cases, and sent 'em to RCBS with the sizing die.
Got a new sizer.
Problem solved.

If case length is the the problem, first try shimming a few test cases with a paper disc in the bottom of the shell-holder before you do any grinding. There's usually a little up-and-down looseness there, some times enough to accommodate more than one paper disc.
The thickness of any required shim[s] will tell you how much grinding is necessary if that's where the solution lies.
Cutting and using the paper shim[s] is a nuisance, but they're faster and cheaper than having to buy a new shell-holder or die.

Good suggestion from Ken on using shim material if there is any vertical tolerance between the case and bottom of shell holder - but easier to use a layer of Scotch (or other) tape and add a layer or two if needed. Just stick it on the base of the shell and trim around it. Easy enough to mic the thickness of the tape.

Maybe turn your die in another 1/8-1/4 turn. I have seen that solve this problem on occasion.

Shimming works. Paper is a bit iffy, but a strip of soda can has been know to work just right.... HTH, Dutch.
