I posted early this year as looking for a particular Model 1895 and will revise that post shortly with more detailed info. In the interim, I am still looking for my great-grandfather's Model 1895 and have the following questions in case I find it:

1. Does anyone know a good gunsmith in Southern California to recommend who would be qualified to check out an 1895?
2. If found, I would like to fire the rifle (if ok'd by the gunsmith) and would welcome any ammo suggestions folks may have (unless firing it would be a huge mistake.)
3. Is it possible to find copies of the original owner's manual/instruction booklet that would have come with the rifle?
4. It is possible that the rifle I am looking for may still be in Oklahoma where it was sold in a yard sale in Oklahoma City... Does anybody know any Savage collectors there? My # is 213-200-7934 or e-mail faulrichgmail.com if you could have them contact me.

Thanks for any help with any of the above questions!
Richard

1) I'd trust Lightfoot's appraisal of it as to whether it's safe or not, if he's willing to help with it.

2) As for ammo, any proper 303 Savage ammunition will work just fine. You can watch for factory stuff off of the auction sites, or PM 1899Sav and see about buying some handloads from him.

3) Owner's manual/instruction booklet for an 1895.. might look for a repro or scan of an early catalog, they had instructions and parts lists in them.

Good luck!

The 1897 Repro Catalog has some pretty good info in it.

Was a gift for 'Fest 2010 attendees. Don't know how to obtain a copy now?

Thanks to Lightfoot, Calhoun, and Rick99 for all of the good info. I haven't been around long enough to know who Ralph is, but will re-check some of the Fest 2010 posts. I'll send Lightfoot a PM shortly.

Thanks again! Richard
