I have a Remington 7600. At some point in its life someone filed a "flat" in the stock where the sling mount goes. The mount stripped in the wood. I moved the mount forward but now I have a spot to fill. I cleaned up the area by squaring it up with a file. I cut and glued an over-sized piece of walnut and glued it in place. I have rough filed the new wood but now need to finish it. What is the recommended practice for shaping this wood without screwing up the rest of the stock?

You can cover the existing wood around your plug with one layer of quality masking tape then sand it down until you start to go thru the tape.
Put 1 drop of finish on the plug and sand with 400 grit paper to start filling in the pores. Let the mud dry on the plug for 1-2 days then sand smooth and repeat until the pores are filled in.
Remove masking tape and try to finish blend the plug as best as possible to the stock.
Apply 1 drop finish oil and hand rub over area. Many, many thin coats are better than a few heavy coats.
The trouble with these spot repairs is they tend to just grow bigger if you are not patient and skilled enough. Good luck and post some pics.
