Since every now and then the "one rifle" thread pops up how about a "one scope" thread. What scope would you use if you could only have one brand and model of scope (you could have one for every rifle but it has to be the same model)?

3.5-10 Leupold. Have had great luck with them and see no reason to change.

1.5-5x20 Leupold or similar. But with heavy reticle on some.

Easy.

1.5-6x42. Can be Zeiss, Swarovski or Schmidt and Bender. I have a number now and have yet to find a better way to go for deer hunting. They are not the absolute best past 400 yards, but anything that matches these at 400 and gets better further is not well suited at all for under 100.

Help me here - what makes the 1.5-6x42 better than a 2.5-10x42 made by the same company? Aren't size and weight virtually identical?

Is it FOV at low power? I've never felt handicapped getting on game at extremely close range at 4x or below.

Is it low light? I can put a 2.5-10x42 on 6x and get the same performance as provided by 1.5-6.

So what exactly is it that would make the 1.5-6x42 better at less than 100 yards than a 2.5-10x42?

I'm not trying to pick a fight or be obnoxious - just trying to understand the perspective of others. FYI - I don't own either but am considering a 2.5-10x42 as my "one scope"

Speed at low power, for me. Even faster on larger game when equipped with a heavy reticle. YMMV.

Lighter weight never hurts, when that's also a possibility.

4-16x50 Hensoldt...as long as I can keep the scope I have now as I've become fairly decent operating it.

This is easy too. 1.5-6x42 glass all comes with heavy duplex first focal plane reticles. You can get HD reticles and FFP reticles in 2.5-10, but about half seem to be 2FP reticles.

The 1.5-6x42s are fast with the high quality optics and wide FOV. Faster for me than my 2.5-10x50. I could make do with my 2.5-10, just like a lot of people can make do with a 3-9x40. But...I have used the 1.5-6x42s and I just don't find a better scope for deer hunting, have never seen a better scope, and I have used 1-4x20/24 high end glass as well as 2.5-10 high end glass. I tried a 1-6 Z6, but the one I had my hands on was not able to maintain focus near and far.

Speed is not always critical, the last two deer I killed (Nov. 2010) I had a little over half an hour of scope time on each before I pulled the trigger. But, when you need fast and close those scopes deliver almost as well as open sights. Crank 'em up to 6x and they are the same as any other high quality 6x. Beyond 4x in decent light I could be happy with a lot of scopes. It's only in the hard conditions that I get picky.

Pacecars: For Varmint Hunting my "one scope" would be a Leupold 8.5x25 variable and for Big Game Hunting my "one scope" would be a Leupold 4.5x14 variable.
