I want/need to setup a rifel to shoot wild hogs at night (I am legal) in my crop fields and such. Looked at a site (Jagerpro.com) a hog hunting specialist and his optics would take a pretty decent gas well to pay for them.
Searching around I see some GenI optics under $500, but I know you get what you pay for.
Anyone here got experience with this? Want to set this up on a mini thirty: Keep my optics and add something on the front? Get the full blown IR scope?
Look for older systems, getting old and ready to die?
Help, they're eating as we speak.

I have looked through Gen 1 scopes (did not impress me) If you can aford it get a Gen II or even better Gen III.
I have a Gen III tube in my scope and where I live you can not put an IR on the scope and still be legal.
Even with out the IR I can see very well even in complete darkness (to a point).
Good luck with your search
And Welcome to the forum

I wouldn't waste the money on a Gen 1 . Don't buy anything less than the Gen 2 Plus. I'm getting ready to order me either the D760 or D740 which is, one is a 4 power and the other a 6 power. Both scope are Gen 3 with Pinnacle Tubes. There is about 200.00 difference between the scopes. I'm leaning toward the D740 4 power because of the field of view difference at 100 yards because i can't afford both the scope and the goggle for spotting when calling. Here is the Web Site from where I'm going to buy. This site will tell you a great deal about what you need. They also have a great night vision forum . I'm setting up one of my AR Upper just for night hunting but trying to decide where to use the 5.56 or 6.8 for a dedicated night rifle. Will post photos when i get this setup finished. I just received the ARMS 19 Mount to use with this scope. I have also posted the site for the QD Mount. I'm only a couple of hundred dollar away from ordering. http://www.tnvc.com/shop/category/night-vision-scopes/ http://www.mountsplus.com/mm5/merch...;Product_Code=ARMS-19&Category_Code=

Yep, Gen-1 sucks compared to 2 or 3. Gen-4 is incredible, but really pricey!
That said, even Gen-1 beats a non-night-vision scope by a long ways.

I suspect you can get by with a conventional scope if your night vision is fully functional. How far will you be shooting with that Mini 30 ? Any moonlight ? You might try borrowing a rifle or just a scope with a 50-56mm objective and decent, fully multicoated optics and see what you can see. With a 40-42mm scope, try 6X. With a 50mm, try 7X and with a 56mm, try 8X. Keep in mind that you may well have to go for a heavier reticle in order to see it well enough to shoot. Such rifle scopes are readily availiable in the $500 range. E

If you can't afford a Dedicated Gen 2 or Gen 3 then you might want to consider the ND-3 x50 Subzero from Laser Genetics. I personally don't think there is a Gen 4 as of today. Just marketing Hype from ATN http://www.lasergenetics.com/nd3x50-sub-zero-laser-designator.aspx
