Ice went out five days ago. Lake not turned over yet, so these fish we got Friday were still very deep.

They should be in on top in about a week.

Went again today, and the trout are still deep! That's unusual for two weeks after ice out.

Three of us brought home five nice fish in two hours. Had a shore lunch, saw three bears, nine goats and a gorgeous sunset!

Nice fish Yukoner!
I'm packing my gear as we speak and will soon be on my way to your area. I'm craving some fresh trout. The water turn-over shouldn't be too far off.

Email coming your way. Give me a shout when you get here.

The lakes will surely be turned in another week. Should have been by now.

Yuknoer,

I have fished mackinaw in Lake Tahoe. That was years ago, and the fish we brought to net looked nothing like the ones you caught. Actually, my then nine-year-old son landed the largest of the day which was about six pounds. The outfitter with whom we fished told me that the lake record is well over thirty pounds, and that that Lake Tahoe holds many that are bigger. He told me that if fisherman learned how to fish mackinaw, it would be more likely that large ones would be brought to net. He said too many fishermen use too light line that big fish just break right off.

BTW, what is the world record for mackinaw?

Thanks,

Leon

72 pounds even, caught in Great Bear Lake, N.W.T. on Aug. 19, 1995 by Lloyd E. Bull.

I have seen them caught over fifty pounds up here, even bigger from nets. A 102 pound lake trout was taken in a gillnet in Lake Athabasca, Saskatchewan, in the early 1960s.

There is a 100 pound-plus fish that was caught in a net, that is mounted and on display in Casa Loma, in Toronto, Ontario. I have seen that mount and the thing looks like a pig. It is barely twice as long as it is deep!

We are going again in the morning. Been too busy to get away since my last post. The fish should be on top. Trolling very long lines close to shore, swimming seven inch plugs and spoons about five to ten feet under the surface should do it!

Yukoner,

I hope you're able to land the new world record. It certainly appears you're in the right region to do so. While I am sure Lake Tahoe has a few monsters, I seriously doubt there is anything that big in it.

Maybe I can talk the wife into another Lake Tahoe getaway this summer. I'd love to have a shot at even a thirty pound freshwater fish.

Please keep us posted on how you do.

Good fishin',

Yukoner,

I got your email...sorry I missed you....I'll try to connect on the next rip.

I see you are in a freight canoe....Teslin model?

I have a 21 Scott fiberglass freighter and love it....I just bought a new 20Hp Honda 4 stroke for it but found it to be much more than this old guy needs.....I have a 15 whicjh is a great plenty and my 8 would be enough of not fighting current.
I'd give someone a good buy on this Honda 20 with only 20 hours on it.

If you get out fishing, please swat a few of those mosquitoes to thin them out.

"BTW, what is the world record for mackinaw?"

In the mid-1950s, divers were hired to check the dam at Crowley Lake half-way between Bishop, CA and Mammoth, CA. After one dive, the divers swore they would never dive there again. They claimed they saw fish that were larger than they were.

In the early 1960s, I was standing on a cliff with my father and uncle 200 feet above the outflow of Crowley Lake. We had a view of the river at ice-out. I saw lake trout swimming near the edge of the ice that were 6-9 feet long.

For the last few years I have been fishing for mackinaw in Cultus Lake in central Oregon and have caught a few 20 inchers. Others have caught some over 30 pounds. Guess Ill have to keep trying.

Vern,

Good meeting you last Saturday. We left right after you did. Pretty good day, caught nine. Phil and Bob were pretty happy guys!

Here's four we brought home.

[Linked Image]

One for the wall, Phil's biggest fish ever, and one for each family on Sunday.

Picture should have been filled in, but flash wan't working on Phil's camera.

See you next week.

Yukoner, just curious, what would you say Phil's fish weigh (I'm guessing Phil is the the person with the sweat shirt)?

Still Learning, Dan

We didn't weigh them, but his big fish is in the low twenties, the other one around six pounds.

He's Huge! I don't have a clue (remember I'm still learning here ), but its got to be well over twenty! In length did he make the 50's (inches)? What a fish.

Noticing the date in the picture, that was just yesterday. Man you had a good day fishing! Nice picture. Posting pictures like this you're really hurting my desire to work until retirement.

Anybody else have some guesses? Where's Wildone? This is getting saltwater size .

Seriously though, thanks for posting that's quite a fish and a great picture too.

Well, boys, it's the shortest day of the year. Sunrise was at 10:10 this morning, and will be down aound 3:50 this afternoon.

Our weather has been so crazy here, that most of the big lakes are still open and very little snow on the roads to them. Terry and I decided to go trolling for lake trout today, just so we could say we had done it on Dec 21st.

Phil said he wanted to go, but couldn't today, so we have decided to go tomorrow. The wind was up a bit this morning, gusting to 50 K. Discretion being the better part of valour, tomorrow will actually be better. We don't need any more ice spray freezing on the boat than necessary.

This trip could be, "The last lake trout of the year!."

Will report back tomorrow evening..

Ted,
I'm probably going to be coming up next summer/fall to visit a friend that lives in Dawson. I'm going to have to give you a call and maybe we can wet a line. I've never caught a laker over 6 pounds but I sure would like too!

Ted,

That looks like more fun than ice fishing.....this is a great winter huh?

A guy named Sam Steele shows up in Dawson he could get some mileage out of that......He could claim to be a grandson or some such.

SS, let me know a few weeks before you come up and we'll do our best to hook you up with one bigger than six pounds!

Thanks for the Christmas greetings David.

Vern, it was fun, that's for sure! Maybe not more fun than ice-fishing, but we had a good day. Left the big ones in the lake, kept a few for friends coming over for dinner tonight.

Crazy warm winter, for sure. Usually by this time we would be ice fishing. Could easily be -40...........or colder.

You guys are having way to much fun. But hey it's the 23rd you probably already have more sun. at least by a few seconds and it's only looking up from there. We'll be past January and Feburary before you know it. I go over to Haines about every other year, may need to stop in. If you get over this way give a hollar.

Thanks for the greetings, Dan.

We are actually getting ready to do some serious ice-fishing if the lakes ever freeze.

May the Good Lord bless all of you fishers abundantly, with good health, joyous times and tight lines in 2006!
