Thanks for the movie clip.
I think that was a clip from a show the aired on the Discovery Channel a few years back. It would be nice if they air that show again...
One thing I took away from that show was the Hynea groups will mess with female Lions but head for the hills when the male Lions show up....I think the Hynea killing is a specialty of male Lions...one of their limited duties.

I think it's mostly spliced movies, but it is realistic, I have heard that male lions can get pissed and go postal on hyena's when protecting there womens

Most of the footage comes from a documentary called "Eternal Enemies" filmed in the Savuti. I think the filmaker was Joubert.

People sleep peaceable in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Wow! I thought I saw the "oh sh*t" look in the eyes of that solo hyena sprinting across the plain with Simba close behind. It's a tough life out there ...

When I lived in Ethiopia I travelled out at night passing native villages out in the country. There was no electicity. They had fires burning. As I approached each village I could see those same glowing eyes that appeared in the film. Every village was surrounded by them sitting back 100 to 200 meters away.
I was always thankful that I didn't have a flat tire or run out of gas.
Late one night, close to midnight I got really tired and pulled over to catch a few winks. Shortly "something" passed just in front of me. I switched on the headlights and just caught a glimpse of it. Didn't get any sleep so I started the car and drove on to Addis Ababa.

The glowing eyes surrounding the villages were hyenas. Every village had dozens of them. The villagers kept fires going all night. They built thornbush corrals to hold their livestock.
We drilled some wells down in the Rift Valley. One of my Ethiopian drillers, Amos, was leaving the rigsite. He always carried a 9mm handgun. He spotted a hyena and shot it breaking it's back. Then he drove up close with his pickup. The hyena lunged and bit his front tire and Hissssssssssss. Flat. They have enormously powerful jaws. Amos was afraid to get out so he just sat there until someone rescued him. He was superstitious. He believed the hyena had an evil spirit that could harm him.
In the film clip at the end a lion and a hyena were battling. Just at the end the hyena got on top of the lion and looked as though he has it by the throat. Then the clip ended. I wouldn't take any bets on the lion at that point.
