I will be keeping my Marlin lever gun in 357 mag as a home defense option. Since I get plenty of extra velocity from that 20 inch barrel I am looking for a milder self defense factory load to use. What say you? Please; no 38 Special loads; I have had it with trying to keep a 357 chamber clean after shooting 38's in one. Thanks...

My point was to start reloading............
Nothing like a custom tailored load made by "YOU"
But do whatever you want.

I think Tom264 is right. Reload. Otherwise, clean your chamber.

How about just answering the original question: does anyone make reduced velocity self defense loads in 357 magnum? Thanks...

How about just answering the original question: does anyone make reduced velocity self defense loads in 357 magnum? Thanks... I honestly have no idea as to your question. But my question back is why have a 'reduced power self-defense load'? Can you not run .38 Special loads in that rifle which would, IMHO, be just the ticket?

OK. In my orginal post I listed: 1. reduced velocity 357 self-defense loads. 2. Factory loads. 3. No 38 Specials. Does that help? Should I have explained my reasoning more eloquentyly? Thanks...

Gary, I have the same rifle and I have not seen any factory reduced loads. The 38s that you don't want because of how dirty it makes the rifle (I agree) might be your best bet for home defense. Hopefully you won't have to use it so the cleanly issue might be a non issue if you decide to use them. As has been mentioned it may be time to reload.
Good luck, Don

Some Marlins will tollerate shorter rounds, others are more finicky. They are popular with cowboy action shooters and often require tuning to run fast. Just for home defense, all that shouldn't be necessary. I'd sure cycle a number of the chosen rounds to make sure there are no hang ups.
As a handloader, I've not spent much time pondering this question. Frangible bullets, as mentioned before, may be the answer. Most .357 commercial loads are full power.

I don't think there is a factory load to suite what you want.
So now that the original question has be answered I have a couple of thoughts, take them for what they're worth...
I don't get worrying about the dirtying of your chamber for a self defense round. I get that you wouldn't want to plink all day with a 38spl load as it can be a beotch to clean after the fact. BUT why not just spend one day finding a 38spcl Self Defense load that shoots and cycles through your gun. You will have a one time PITA of cleaning your gun after that range session. BUT after that there is no reason to ever shoot those dirty 38s in your gun again. Just when you get home, leave it loaded with the 38s, you don't have to keep shooting them. Next time you go to the range shoot 357s. Problem solved
Oh, and don't get so pissed off when folks are just trying to help you out, it makes life here on the fire a lot better when you can keep that kind of stuff in check.
Best of luck.
Matt

just shoot a 125 grain hollow point and get a 12 gauge with 00 That way you won't have to use a dirty rifle or reload.

Gary,
My question to you is, why do you want a "milder" self defense load? Unless I missed it, I didn't notice you listed a reason why.
Recoil? Penetration?

You will have to shoot different brands, but the Winchester Silvertip ammo I've tried seemed to be loaded somewhat milder from a handgun than other stuff I've tried.

Unless you live at the OK Corral - I wouldn't worry what kind of loads I used in a 357 rifle - because unless you are dealing dope - because your chances of a home invasion is right up there with being hit by a falling star. On the other hand - if you did have to use it - what would it matter how powerful it was - because after it traveled through a person - half of its energy would probably be spent going through the body. There is a shop - just up the road from my house that makes frangible ammo - International Cartridge http://www.iccammo.com/I can't believe that none of you geniuses didn't think of it.
