280 hands down!

When I hear "mountain rifle" I'm thinking an ultra light weight, skinny barrel, "backpacking" rig.

That calls for a short action and that says 7-08 Though a 284 or one of the short mags would fill the bill.

Three pages of responses and no mention of the 7 x 57 Mauser.

Jocko would shake his head about that, but he would mention that the .270 is an excellent choice also.

Where you hit 'em is more important than what you hit 'em with. So pick your preference, practice a bunch, and get/stay in shape for climbing those hills.

270....270, and 270. If it were a short action I would say 260.

A hunter gets his deer. A good hunter can make long shots. A great hunter likes it up close and personal!
