I have a few parts around the shop to build a 25-06 or a 25-06 AI spec. Gun. Of the two which one is the most popular on the Campfire?

It will be easier to sell 25-06 but I would do the AI version every time. Since your building it we all know it will be a shooter Mt.Rifle pattern and a number 2 at 23" would be my choice.

Sounds sweet! I just got back a 25-06AI with a #1 Rock. Ain't got to shoot it yet though.

The practical minded might go with a 25-06 but there are a BUNCH of rifle loonies here and the AI version gets a bunch of good press here...

Personally, I like the AI, although my Cooper is straight up .25-06 and seems to go bang and make stuff fall over just like my AI guns.

If you can't get it done with a 25-06, why build a wildcat with a tiny resale market ? Just get a 257 Weatherby which will do more and have many more buyers should you decide to unload it down the road.

Since your building it we all know it will be a shooter No doubt. I have a few Gradous rifles and each one shoots extremely accurate.

I've got a safe full of AIs, but for some reason, I'd stick with a vanilla 25-06 over the AI version. Maybe it's because I've watched my old man kill an ark full of deer with one...

Boy the straight up 25-06 sure is a good one and it does shoot so I would go that route. But it will be a fine rifle either way but 25-06 gets my vote!!

I bought 25 06 AI dies about 4 years ago and finally built one last year . It's a Rem 700 Mcmillan classic in Coyote bomber with a #5 Kriger cut at 23 inches with a Leupold 4.5X14 . I think it's absolutley a perfect hunting rifle. With IMR 4831 I pushed a 117 Sierra Pro Hunter up to 3192 (10 shot avg) most accurate load was RL 22 With Nosler 115 BT at 3045 (10 shot avg).

I remember reading the other day in one of my books by P.O. Ackley.... he felt the 25/06 was overbore... and that the AI version was not worth the returns...
that coming from the Guru himself...
that would carry a lot of weight for me..

I'm a big Ackley fan, but with the 25-06, I'd go regular.

Even if the AI wasn't faster it looks and sounds real cool....grin. I'm not big on trimming so that helps?
I read in the Sierra manual that the reason the AI wasn't popular back when was due to powder options???

What would the AI version do with, say a Berger 115 gr. VLD, vs. a std. 25-06? Is there that much difference?

6.5-06 AI. Better long range bullets.

Standard 25-06 for me. Nothing wrong with the AI, but I'd like to get an idea how much "extra" the AI would get in the 25 without pushing the barrel past 24 inches.

seafire, if PO Ackley thought the .25-06 was overbore, yet his favorite is said to be the .257 Roberts AI, which has the same bore size and almost same powder capacity....?

A cartridge is only overbore if there is not a proper powder for it. Since PO's days we have a whole new assortment of newer slower powders that will work.

I don't think PO had any RL-22 to play with! Monashee
