Hmmm..yes my M70 short action is slightly longer than a M700 short action, but to get even close to 3" you would have to remove the magazine block and modify the bolt block and ejector.
Even then, I measure the magazine at almost exactly 3" so you'd need to have the cartridges somewhat shorter than that to get them to feed properly.
Hardly worth all the effort for a miniscule increase in case capacity, IMO.

I have a Bob on a 700 short action and load everything to an OAL of 2.80". In a 22 inch barrel I get about 3100 fps with 100 grainers, 2950 with 110s and 2850 with 120s. By examining published load data and what I've learned at the Campfire, I'm confident these loads are all well within the safety zone, probably under 60000 psi. I just don't see a reason to have a long action if you're going to build a Bob

257Heaven,
its no big deal. we all have opinions. I know the short action will work. I know bigger bullets can be seated deep. I was just sharing my opinion, and I stand by it.
it would bother me to have a x57mm cased cartridge in a SA. but, It wouldn't bother me to have a 260 Rem.
But, cartridge for cartridge I wold prefer the 257bob I've got a 3 inch magazine, so I wouldn't think this would be an issue.

Talked to my gunsmith today and he recommends a 24 inch tube over the 22 inch tube for extra velocity. This would increase the weight of my rifle by about a pound.
Not sure if I want the extra weight. Decisions, decisions. Something to sleep on/

Never missed a shot at anything and thought 'Gee, I would have made that shot if I had an extra 2 inches of barrel'

Arns9 would you mind sharing your recipe? Ive searched and read the old posts and have just started to keep a note pad to jot down grains/powders, bullets etc. So any extra info would be helpful.

With the Nosler 110 grain Accubond, I have an OAL of 3.210" to the lands. With the Nosler 115 grain Partition, it's 3.175" to the lands. So, the long action and mag. box are needed here.

Browning is chambering the Micro-Medallion in the 'bob with a 20" bbl, so action length shouldn't be an issue.
personally, I'd never want a 24" barrel on any gun unless it's a varmit gun or a magnum.
I don't drink or Smoke. I spend my money on gunpowder and gasoline.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

have had/ do have both. Just to stir it up I took a 6.5x47 Lapua necked it down to .257" If you ask me thats the perfect round. Uses less powder than the .257 bob gets almost the same velocity as my .257Ackley Kills just as dead as my .260! ML
My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all my gear for what I said I paid for it.

I use H4350 for all my Bob loads. With the 100 grainers, I use 47 grains; with the 110s I load 45 grains, and use 44 grains with 120s. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thinking about having my 308 rebarreled to a 257 roberts or 260 remington for no good reason other than because.
This will be for deer, hogs, less likely varmints.
Opinions???? of those two choices like most said pretty even split( i have both ) i would choose the rifle i liked best not worry about the cartrige as it has already been pointed out if you are going to build one or the other from a donor .308 the .257 works best in a long action i promise

I am currently building a .257 bob on a long action 700, somebody recommended that I send a 3.00" dummy cartridge to PacNor for the barrel build. How common is it to set the bullet out past 3" overall?

my reason for saying a long action will work best is that with longer bullets especially you can "chase" the lands as the throat eroads and building the bob on a short action will limit this more
