Yup to all musings! If you do a search you should be able to come up with a bunch of threads on the 6.5WSM.
I have two (Browning falling blocks) and just luv 'em! Cat
Jim Busha's .260 Heavy Express (a WSM predecessor) would do 3,050 fps MV with a 140 Hornady Spire Point. It was designed to duplicate the .264 Win Mag in a short-action rifle.
I have a 6.5-'06 so I have not responded to this particular siren song.

It is a Rex Hinman custom-built rifle using a Rem M700 action pillar-bedded into a MacMillan synthetic stock, with a Shilen barrel and chamber cut with a Red Elliott reamer. It has a Burris Signature 4X40 scope mounted.
It will shoot its best 3-shot groups into the 2s with 120 gr Noslers. It also shoots 140 grain to 160 grain hunting bullets well too, and is a great "one-shot group" rilfe (meaning the first shot kills 'em dead).
I moved up to it from a 6.5X55 Swede, and just never saw a reason to move on to the .264 Win Mag or whatever. I do think about a 6.5X68 from time to time.

The WSM case has less powder capacity than the Winny. Therefore, when loaded to the same pressures, it will not match the velocities of the 264 WM. I have a 6.5x284 as my "really stupid light walkin' rifle". The 6.5 bore has seduced me away from .25's as a dual purpose (bigger varmints to any deer anywhere) caliber.
The WSM (or 264 winny) is too much power for a dual purpose rig, but would be a very fine game rifle.
Jim I have a 264 Win model 70 my wife bought for me for our 25th anniversary, last year. I love that rifle! I will shoot a three shot group of 129 grn. Hornady's the size of a quarter at 200 yds. I killed my Mule deer last year at about 250. Bang flop. My question about the 6.5 WSM was why when they do nothing we can't already do.
Well we're Green and we're Gold, and we play better when it's cold. All us Cheese heads have our favorite superstar. We love Brett Favre.
Jim Carmichael wrote an article about it in the Feb.'05 edition of "Outdoor Life". He calls it the "6.5 Leopard". He is very high on this cartridge.--2MG
I tested some loads with the 120 gr. XLC and the 130 gr. TSX the other day in my 6.5 WSM or Whizzum. And whizzum it do. The best load so far used the 130 TSX (the heaviest bullet I care to shoot in this rifle and all that is necessary for any 6.5 IMHO). It went into 5/8" @ 100 clippin' along at 3464. The slowest 120 gr. XLC load went into 1/2". I'll be playing with both some more to confirm "the" load. I also just received some back ordered 120 TSX boattails. I'm optimistic those will shoot very well. If they don't then I'll be plenty happy to use the 130's for everything but practice. For that, 95 gr. V-Max's shoot bug holes @ 3600+. This rifle has a 27" three groove S/S Supermatch from Pac-Nor twisted 1:9. I have a 3.5-10 Leupy Tactical on it all sitting in a Micky A-2. Good luck, Troy
Better late than never . The brown rifle is the WSM the black is my .30-8mm. Good luck, Troy
Hmmm ..... actually the only short anything that has me excited is the thought of necking the 25 wssm up to 6.5 for use in my AR -15. To better the "Swede" in a semi auto( not to mention a "DREADED ASSAULT WEAPON") surely does get me going. Anyone interested in a 12 lb. AR 10?
