I am thinking about a remington 700 build. What is better a blued or stainless action?

Related question: Did Brownell's have all Rem 700 actions but are now sold out of some models? I understand from their site it was a limited run. I'm specifically looking for a SS SA magnum action.

I was under the impression that they just bought them back.

The SS SA magnum is the only action they don't list.

Priced $399 to $439 for the other ones.

is there anything that isn't as good about the new sps actions as the old blued actions?

Stainless is more prone to galling.

I much prefer stainless due to it's corrosion resistance. Was one of the main reasons I just flipped two CM actioned rigs to build a single stainless...

SPS actions are not nearly as smooth as the old blued. I like SS, but old blue are NICE.

A little sanding with 400 wet/dry on the rails slick 'em right up, and keeping grease on the lugs cures the rest. People that gall lugs are just as apt to do it on CM.

Yeah that's the same think I'm doing. Slowly phasing out the CM stuff. Hate having to oil after every hunt..

I can run either. I coat the action regardless and don't have any rust issues. Plus it smooths 'em out slicker than snot.

I left one of my cerakoted CM 700s outside the tent one night in drizzly foggy conditions last fall. Not a speck of rust inside or out though it was covered in moisture the next AM. I popped the barreled action out a month ago and everything was rust free. I do coat the mag follower spring with Johnsons paste wax, and wipe down the bolt with Corrosion X. The RifleBasix trigger & internals, and safety parts are coated in KG Gunkote.

Do prefer SS for the barrel though, best thing since sliced bread!

On a hunting rifle I'd always go stainless. There's no advantages to a blued rifle unless you like the look or just want to save some money. The galling issue is a bunch of hooey, a little grease every couple of years and it's a non-issue. Remington uses chrome moly for the locking lugs anyway even on stainless actions so it's even less of an issue with them.

Stainless is my pick but I can run CM action, but will not put a CM barrel on.

I can live with a CM action, but not a CM barrel.

I have galled one SS 700 a long time ago, not lubing the lugs in a 7STW enough or the wrong lube IIRC. I now use anti-seize sparingly and no galling issues since.

Could someone briefly describe galling?

I always go SS for barrels but actually prefer chromoly rem 700 actions the older the better.
