Do these filters catch the iron/calcium in hard water?

Whatever you get, don't get one with the blue display lights. Hate those piercing things. Waaay too bright. They put them on air flters and everything else - freaking blind ya.

Not one person has addressed the BPA exposure due to the plastics in just about every coffee maker on the market. I'm talking makers of 10-12 cups, not the small ones. Plus, I'm cheap and won't pay the electricity to keep water heated 24/7.

We went to the old tried and true Presto stainless steel percolator, 12 cup model. No plastics, no water gets pumped through the heating elements to calcify, replaceable elements. We use the same coffee filters as a drip, just poke a hole in the center and put it right in the basket. 95% of the grounds are captured.

I am a coffee snob and I want one of those! My mother has had one for a few years and it makes better coffee from the little cups than I make with my fresh beans, burr grinder and Capresso coffee maker. Plus I like being able to chose from all of the variety of cups available. Newman's Own Extra Bold in the AM, Green Mt. regular in the afternoon and 1/2 caf after dinner. Plus my wife can have flavored coffee, which I won't put in my grinder.

As soon as our current maker quits we're going Keurig.

Been using a single cup paper filter manual model for many years and it is the easiest and slickest way to go... When crowds show we have a regular drip machine but it gets only the tiniest fraction of use...

I sometimes walk into the kitchen in the middle of the night and there are so many little red dots, and illuminated digital clock displays that I don't need to turn on the ceiling lights at all.

We have a cure for that. We just refuse to have power in the house.

My wife removed 99% of the plastics in her kitchen ten years ago. Our drinking water comes straight out of the well through a cast iron hand pump into a glass gallon jug.

After reading the replies here, I am going to buy a French Press for myself. Everyone seems to think that they make the greatest of coffees, and considering that I drink my coffee black, I really would prefer it to be the best it could be.

The brand however is the big question....

No, the big question is the coffee!

But that's a whole other thread.

When you use a french press, don't use finely ground beans as you'll get a bitter coffee. A medium grind is the way to go, and if you like your coffee black, you'll like the french press.

What Cheesy said. We've had one going on 6 yrs. now. Makes 1-2 pots of coffee, everyday, and we also brew our ice tea in it. Once every 4-6 mos. we run some white vinegar thru it to clean it out. Bunn works like a champ.

maddog

plus 1. work your bunn off getting it to crap out. they're breasts. if you want tiny cups of really strong coffee, look elsewhere. if you want a 16 oz. travel mug of good, hot joe, get a bunn. why do you think most commercial 'makers are either bunns or something just like 'em. they work, no foolin'.
