Should I at a minimum adjust the trigger? I have done the new rifle thing both directions - -Adjust trigger, bed action and free float barrel then go shooting or -Adjust trigger and go shooting.
Either way I do a thorough cleaning and screw tightening. What would you do?

I'd clean it, check screws and go shoot it myself. My 7-08 cdl shot about 1 1/4" groups out of the box with no adjustments. I like to know what they do out of the box. Once you see that, you can always do things like trigger or bedding. I didn't even try other loads (that was with just the cheap remmy or winchester 140's, whatever I had left from ly last 7-08) and may have found some other factory load that shot better. I'm kind of of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset.
If it doesn't shoot to your satisfaction, THEN you can start tinkering...=)
Adjust trigger,bed lug,crazy tighten fasteners,install Leupold,size brass to chamber,insert Re-15,kiss lands and shoot itty-bitty clusters.
My first concern would be to zero it and then finding pressure.
Then I'd shoot the [bleep] outta it.................

I've yet to have a SUCKS 7-08,that wouldn't accept mag fed rounds that kissed lands, with the projectiles of interest to me.
I'd leave the pad,but would FL skim bed the channel................

I'd float the barrel and tune the trigger, first. Almost every 700 I've seen bears on one side of the channel or the other. My Classic shot very well after these mods.

I just bought a 700 BDL in .223. The trigger was a bit heavy out of the box. I spent about 20 minutes adjusting it to my preference...removed the creep and reduced the pull to about 3 1/2-4 lbs. and performed the required safety checks after any trigger adjustment. It shot 1 inch groups right out of the box so no further work needed. I was very pleased with the quality and accuracy of their product. Hope yours shoots as well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I'll find out. Took about 1 minute to get the trigger to 3lbs. Backed the screw out and resealed it. Bedded behind the recoil lug and that's it. I'll try to get it out in a week or two. Dave

On mine all I did was take my little screw driver and scraped the slot out and a little around the outer perimeter and it moved. No problem at all. Resealed with finger nail polish. Dave

When I get a new rifle, I give the bore a good cleaning, then head to the range. If it doesn't shoot to my satisfaction, I float the barrel, and adjust the trigger. I never saw a rifle shoot worse after floating the barrel. I also try several different bullets and loads. Bullet seating is very important, and may be limited by magazine length. I always check the chamber with my Stoney Point gauge before I load any rounds.
Are the chambers cut to allow kissin the lands and fit the magazine? Would you leave the pressure point? Dave
Dave, My 700S/S wears a H-S stock, so I don't have to worry about pressure point, when it wore the tupperware stock I did relieve the point though, didn't seem to matter nonetheless. Also installed 3.5-10 Lupy and got the trigger to my liking. When I switched powders from 760 to Varget, RE15 and H4895 the groups really came around, when seating the 150BTs I noticed you couldn't kiss the lands with that bullet and fit in the magazine, but it didn't matter, the bullet shoots just as well at 2.830"(max on Remington magazines) or 2.840", if I remember correctly 2.840" is .010" off the lands.
With the 150MK, 2.800" is .010" off the lands.
Btw, With the 150BTs my load id 39.5grs. Varget, CCI 200, primer, that load shoots as good as 1.5"(3 shots) @300yds. J
The new CDL in 7-08 is a keeper. Nice looking and a shooter. This is the first 100yd group. Second group was with 48.5grs of IMR4350 and it was a perfect triangle measuring .750. My 25-06 is also proving to be a consistent shooter. Sorry the pic is not great.

Looks like they're keepers. Looks like someone has sent a round or two down range before this outing.
