Can the I-4 engine still be had on the double cab Tacoma? If so, can you get it in automatic? Can I expect about 25mpg on the highway?

Thanks

I don't think so. I went to the configurator on their website and picked the double cab and automatic. When I changed the 6 cylinder to the 4, it told me to change the other options.

I'd not want the 4 with an automatic.

When I was looking for a Tacoma (single cab and 4X4) , the best deal I could find turned out to be a 4 cylinder with an AT. I wanted one with a 5 speed, but it was too good of a deal to pass up. 40,000 miles later I have no complaints whatsoever. It gets great gas mileage (25+ MPG) and goes everywhere I have put it here on the farm. Get one and you will love it.

if you want 25 mpg

No 6 cyl.
No 4 wd
Forget the dual cab - you might get 22 - it's heavy

Forget towing anything past a lawmower.

Then your good.

My Double Cab 4x4 gets 20 mpg avg, 22 on the highway. If quality is what you want get the Toyota. My 2002 Tacoma has 167,000 plus miles, and I've had ZERO issues. Only complaint is the 5' bed.

heck, my 1988 4Runner, with automatic, 4X4 and the 22RE motor gets 18 mpg around town, and 26 on the road.
It goes anywhere I want to, just not fast. smile

Just under 300,000 well maintained miles.

Really? Have you checked your frame for rust? Should be ready to fall apart about now.

99s-2003 or maybe even later had frames built with questionable steel ----and rusted and recalled. My FIL lost a beautiful low miles 99 and was not justly compensated for babying the damn thing. He wouldn't even drive it in the rain.

What I read about that recall was that Toyota gave owners one and one-half times Bluebook value for their trucks.

There is no bluebook value listed for a truck with lots of aftermarket stuff---showroom condition, and ultra low miles. 40k miles for an 11 year old truck. Can you replace a paid for truck like that for $10.5K?? He paid 23K. + a $1500 cap, brush guard and new Michelin tires.

Yeah, not much you can do for the aftermarket stuff.

Not to advertise for another forum, but for those interested in Tacomas, an excellent site is www.tacomaworld.com. I am a member, and I drive a 2006 double cab. The only aftermarket things I have added on are camo ventvisors, and a custom dipped camo bull bar. There is a FS forum on there and there is always tacos with aftermarket stuff for sale. Everyone always goes straight for another Tacoma when they sell or trade the old ones.

I don't think Toyota should be expected to buy any aftermarket add-ons in a truck buyback program. I would expect to have to recoup some of the cost of the add-ons by selling those myself, assuming they couldn't be re-used on another truck.

Are you saying he paid 23k for it new and eleven years later it books for 10.5k? If so, 1 1/2 times bluebook of $10.5k is $15,750. $23k minus $15,750 = $7,250. Divide that by eleven years and it cost him $659/year. That's pretty cheap use of a truck for that length of time.

And it's not like that stuff won't come off either...

I had a truck in the recall - not a damned thing wrong with it too. IIRC they also offered to replace the rails if they were bad in leiu of the cash offer.

I have a 99 with low miles but no rust issues....course we don't get a lot of road salt here either. My dealer told me if there was a problem, I would get 1.5 times the blue book and I could remove any aftermarket options I wanted. Pretty good deal if you ask me but I'm glad mine was fine.
