I recently bought a commercial FN Mauser which has been rebarrelled to .300 Weatherby. Problem is I already have a .300 Weatherby, so I would like to rebarrel this to something I don't have. Would .458 Lott be a straight rebarrel process? All help is apprectiated.

Thanks,
Rob

If it a standard FN action there must have been some magic done to get in a Magnum cartridge. Probably okay as Safari 300 H&Hs and 375 H&Hs were the same screw center OAL as a 30-06 one. The only issue might be feeding and stock strength. Were it mine, I'd glass bed and double crossbolt the stock. A rebore might be cheaper than a new barrel (caliber markings can be redone and you'll never see how.)

Great cast bullet caliber (cheap and gentle)

It's already in a McMillan, so no worries about the stock.

If it's a magnum bolt face and a loaded cartridge fits the magazine, you can have anything you want.

The .300 Weatherby is 3.56" OAL.

I have rebarrelled Mausers to 7mmRM and 300WM, but they are only 3.34" OAL.

If a .300 Wby. fits and feeds through the magazine, then all the work has been done to get it to function with a full length H&H case, which the .300 Wby. is, along with the .300 H&H and .375 H&H.

The .458 Lott should work with just a re-barrel job, although the rails and feed ramp might have to be fine tuned because of the .45 caliber bullet and cartridge neck.

Another alternative would be to re-barrel/rebore to a .375 H&H, and I have always thought that a .375 Wby. would be nice to have.

Your outside barrel diameter will determine whether or not a re-bore is feasable. The muzzle dia. might be too small to rebore to a .458 or the .375.

There should be no problem with the 458 Lotts on your action

I would expect the 458 lott to require some work to the feed ramp to have 100% smooth feeding, and the magazine box may need some work as well. It's not magic to make it feed, but it's one of theose rounds I can't imagine chambering w/o having 100% reliability.
