Hello all,

I am wondering if a #1 in a 244 Rem can be rebored to a 257 Roberts. If so, who would you reccommend for the work.

Thanks,

ddj

Question is, do you have enough "meat" to do it. Norm will know.

dj,

Short answer is NO. Long answer is:

Rifling is normally .008"-.010" deep from the lands to the grooves. Thus the 6mm with .243" grooves will have apx .234" at the lands.

A .25 cal barrel will thus measure .257" in the grooves and the lands should be .247-.248" or so. If the grooves on a the existing barrel are already cut to .243" then the lands will be too short to properly "grip" the bullet on the .25 cal...

It is generally accepted to bore a rifle, one must go up a minimum of two calibers...

I hope I've explained it to your satisfaction....

Would not that 244 Rem be worth something as a rare collectible as is? There are enough 25 Roberts around already. I'd wait for one to come up or, if the itch was strong enoungh, build something that Ruger doesn't.

Good point, the 244/6mm Remington #1s are rare birds. 257s are not.
If you MUST have one, you could always buy a new Ruger #1 barrel and keep the 244 barrel in the safe.
