Looking for some advice on assault rifles. I don't have one and I'm thinking that should change.
Had a Les Baer Varmint AR that I used for a couple of years, so I'm familiar with hunting AR's. Found that they can be very accurate but require a lot of cleaning.
Any recommendations for something that will take a licking and keep on ticking? Thanks.
I'm better when I move.

one of the new ruger gas piston rifles looks appealing to me.
also, I hate that term "assault rifle" thats a democrat word made to demonize semi autos

Pistons are cleaner. CDNN was still selling some Sig 556's last time I checked. They also have some good deals on Colts and S&W's right now.
Can't go wrong with a good Rock River or Stag, either.

You are going to get a 100 suggestions. Might be best to post this question in the AR forum. Some good deals on some quality guns out there. Really depends on your intended use. Personally I think the gas piston guns are severely overrated.

Best AR rifle out there is the BCM EAG carbine. Pricey, but worth it. Find it at bravocompanyusa.com. Comes with a $200 certificate for a training class by Pat Rogers. Guy's probably the best in the business.

Depends on what your tastes are but I'd say something along the lines of a Rock River Arms mid length A4 w/car stock. Or maybe for a beater gun that ya can't make quit going bang, a Saiga in 7.62x39. Or a combination of the two, a Robinson Armament XCR in 5.56, it has the ergos of an AR and the guts of an AK.

If you are near the east Tampa area, we could meet and you could take my M1A or one of my carbines for a test drive. Shoot me a PM

Some great buys on AR's right now. Anyway, from what I've heard. I seem to never stumble across anything except Obama prices that have never come back down. Seems like there are plenty of them around. You can't go wrong with the AR platform. http://www.olyarms.com/index.php?pa...&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=37

One would think that being kicked off a website 3 times already one might grab a clue?

+1 If you really want a rifle that's effective in combat then get an M1A1. http://springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=41 I used an M-16 in Viet Nam and that's a POS. You can always count on it jamming when it really counts. I bought a Ruger Ranch Rifle in .223 and it produces 12" patterns at 100 yards. KC

Okay, possibly dumb question time!
Do you guys shoot the cheap stuff in those costly BR's?
I watch guys at the range blow through $500 worth of ammo like it's water. But hardly see it on the shelf and when I do it's fairly expensive and does not come in big ole boxes. I know you can buy bulk/re-man/re-load. But again, is that the cheap stuff that may or may not eat away at gun integrity?
Just curious!

Why would a rifle need a device called a "Forward assist"?

A good AR really doesn't need cleaning very often. I don't clean most of my AR's (ARP, BCM, LMT) any more than once every 500 rounds or so, and haven't had any failures. I've got a Noveske that I clean more often but it's not chrome lined and I want to keep accuracy up, not because I'm worried about failures. With the new bolt/carrier coatings like ion-bond and fail-zero's, things are getting better all the time. Some guy ran one of the new Fail Zero Bolt carrier groups *suppressed* for 2000 rounds without cleaning or lubrication and with only a couple of ammo-related stoppages. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=45406PS: generally much easier to keep the DI AR's accurate than the M1A/M14's, ask anyone shooting service rifle matches since 1994 or so. AMU was constantly having to rebuild the M14's to keep up match accuracy, messing with the bends in the rod etc.
The church is near, but the roads are icy. The pub is far away, but I will walk carefully.
