I was developing loads for my Browning 348 win carbine and noticed the hood on the front sight was sliding forward after several shots. Stupidly I slid it further forward, then ,you guessed , it came off. Does any one know if there is a special tool for putting the damn thing back on? Also does anyone know a source for cast bullet molds in 348, for 200, 220, and 250 gascheck bullets, Thanks alot for any help, bigbear

You can use a set of snap ring pliers to put the hood on that Model 71 (or Anschutz or any rifle that uses spring steel hoods). Typical pliers come with a selection of interchangeable tips. Try to pick the flattest one you can find. Put the rifle in a rest, like cleaning cradle. It helps to have someone tap the hood on gently with the rubber handle of a hammer, so you don't open up the gap any more than necessary, or the hood will fly off of the pliers. Wear safety glasses.

RCBS offers it's 348-200-FN#, but I think it's currently only offered as a specialty bullet mold (2 cavity gas check). There are probably others.

I had one of the Browning carbines, nice lever. Slicker than snot. Not the kicker I expected.

I have an original Win 71 / .348. Anniversary present from LOVELY wife last year. Hoping for either a Maine moose or Michigan Elk permit to put it to use.

What ammo are you guys using in the .348? Tough to find ammo, Winchester and Conley Precision seem to be the only factory available.

I have a pre-60 Winchester .348 I occasionally get outdoors <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Was settling for the 200gr Win stuff. Will be handloading some 250gr. Barnes for my next bear hunt. There is other stuff available, like Buffalo Bore, but all are very pricey--2MG

I never heard of Conley Precision. What are they like, and what bullet weights are availiable?

I have 6 boxes, 200 gr winchester. Four are Browning marked commerative, the other 2 are just Super X. I would sell them if I get a decent offer. Buyer pays shipping. Don't have a clue how desireable they are. I had a NIB Browning 71 for about 15 yrs and traded it off.

That Conley ammo sounds like a decent deal. No more than factory really, and better ammo choices. I have several of the 71 commemorative boxes floating around also. Paid $25/box at local gun show last year. Good deal but want heavier loads.--2MG

Removing the hood from my 94 was the best thing ever to happen for shooting with my aging eyes. Just a thought for what it's worth.

Actually have not shot mine at all yet. Planning to handload, might buy a box of factory stuff to start.

Awhile back having loosened my grip on sanity I bought two Browning 71's a rifle and a carbine. The carbine 1st, liked shooting it so much that when a rifle came up, I got it figuring they don't grow on threes and money can go bad. Ishot both yesterday and the recoil on the longer barrled piece is significantly more?! More powder burned? Anyone with insight into this. The loads were exactly the same, 220 Hornady at about 90% max load.
