Olin Corp. announced they are relocating centerfire ops to Oxford, Miss along with 1000 jobs due to two failed ratification votes by members of International Ass'n of Machinest and Aroespace Workers. Looks like tough times ahead in Alton and jobs in Oxford Russ

Illinois had done a property valuation that more than double the tax liability, which led Olin to ask for help from the union, which was turned down. It ain't all the union's fault, you can blame Illinois for a lot of it.

I disagree... The union could have made some concessions that would have let Olin stay there but they SCREWED their members... The union did what unions eventually do... They commit suicide...That's how the Marxist model works.... Burns itself out...

Does that really matter? Unions don't give two $hitts what their personal piggy banks think...

Sure, IL has a great track record of not understanding that there are lots of states that want their businesses but I suspect that the union and the company could have worked out some good deal for the best with a little flexibility.

Coworker of mine's father owned a business up in Philly that had that happen to them. He decided to move his privately held company to North Carolina where they made it worth his while with incentives. He had about 500 employees and he offered them full costs for relocation and their same salary in NC and only about 20 took him up on it.

America has always been a place that people would take off and move if they could better their lives. I see less and less of that and more of the "Oh woe is me" digging in.

Olin Corp. moving 1,000 jobs from Illinois By Associated Press, Posted Nov. 4, 2010 at 7:31 a.m.

Originally Posted by Excerpt from article
Despite the urging of two federal lawmakers, Olin Corp. says it is moving an ammunition plant and 1,000 jobs from Illinois to Mississippi. The Clayton, Mo.-based Olin said Wednesday that its Winchester Centerfire Operations in East Alton will be relocated to Oxford, Miss.
The move was opposed by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Jerry Costello, who wrote a letter in August to Olin President and CEO Joseph Rupp.

In the letter, the legislators said they had worked hard on Capitol Hill to help Olin get sizable government contracts. Those deals included supplying Winchester munitions to the Army and a $54 million deal the lawmakers called the largest ammunition contract in the history of federal law enforcement.

While I feel for those who lost their jobs, union or no, I have nothing but laughter for Durbin and Costello.

In 5 years the only industry that is going to be left in Ill. is WT deer hunting.

And the Dems will find a way to tax that into oblivion too.

Hold on while i wipe that look of surprise off of my face...

Would be interesting to see the Civil War refought now. All the industry, natural resources, military bases and motivated people have left the "Union" states.

Look up the flagpole and see:

Yeh that. Have to be prepared to move, change careers, gain more education to be successful now in America. Too many people want to grow up, go to school, work in the same location where they grew up. That is a recipe for failure in a lot of cases these days. If one is willing to move and change careers I see plenty of jobs in my travels and conversations across the US.
