I purchased a Marlin pre-crossbolt safety 444 NIB in the early 80s and on balance it had been a very good rifle to own. So, I thought I would get in the hunt for a pre-crossbolt .30-30 just to have one for the hell of owning one. Is there a manufacturing period (serial number group or year) that I should avoid when looking for one of these rifles? CP.

I have one made in the early 1950s and it seems to be a little better made than the guns made since then. Could just be bias on my part though.

No problems with my 336 from the mid-70's. Have several Marlins from the 60-70's (not just 30-30's). I usually prefer a pre-crossbolt as well.

I have a 336 made in 1953 that has been the perfect gun. It is by far my favorite gun.

I believe that the Marlins made up till 1969 (New Haven plant) were the best. The North Haven guns (1970- on) were never as smooth or as well finished. That said, the North Haven guns were still a good quality product.
