A "friend" foolishly purchased a 336W today from W-Mart and after getting it home found that the lever is so rough and gritty that you practically need both hands to open it and the but-stock is loose and wiggles vertically. The store had a zip tie around the lever so he couldn't open it and did not allow much coon fingering in the store. I can't believe that Marlin allowed this rifle out of the factory in this condition. When you buy a new firearm you expect it to work out of the box. WTF!!! The question is should he bother sending it back to Marlin or do you think they will just screw it up even more? It almost seems like they hired the monkeys who work at Century to man the plant. I bought an 1895GS 2 years ago that was a big disappointment with regard to wood to metal fit but at least it halfway worked. What is wrong with Marlin these days? All the ones I have shot or owned up until recently were slick working tack drivers.

at the shot show the former manager said that Marlin quality had changed. That person is no longer at Marlin.

Took apart the rifle and deburred the lever carrier etc. Can now cycle the action with one hand but it is still gritty. I will have to work the action a bunch and see if it smoothes up. Next step is to glass bed the butt stock. My friend decided not to risk sending it back to the changos that built it.

After about a thousand cycles the 336 is fairly smooth. I will still do a tune up and polish job on it and then we will see what kind of accuracy it is capable of. Anybody have any opinions on firelapping marlins?

.

Fire lapping will work to some extent. I would shoot it first and find out how it does. If it shoots well you may not want to fire lap.

See how easy it is to clean. I've only lapped one rifle, didn't help the accuracy a bit but it made it a lot easier to clean. As I cleaned between each ten round string, you could feel the bore smoothing out.

I have been down with a flulike illness but hopefully next weekend I will get out to shoot the 336. Thanks for the response.
