There was an article titled: Converting the Savage 99 to Other Calibers" by Robert J. Snapp in the January 1973 issue of The American Rifleman Magazine.
I would like to have a copy of the article. Does anyone have a copy of this article, or this issue of The American Rifleman that would make me a copy? Thanks, Hugh Clark

To the purists: I am not interested in butchering up any collectibles, but I have several junkers that I like to play around with!!!!

Jezzzzzz... My 99 in .300 Savage perfectly fits my needs for whitetail hunting in the low mountains of Pennsylvania. I can't think of another caliber or rifle I'd rather have or one that would do as well. Butttttttt... I kinda agree with what Jeff (260 Remguy) sez, so do your darnest since it's YOUR rifle(s). I hate to see a nice rifle get screwed up, but if it isn't mine I figure that it isn't any of my business.
I once sold the nicest, minty, Savage 99F in 250-3000 that you've ever seen that wasn't NIB, to a man for his collection. He paid a fair price for it and then turned around and gave it to a young person to hunt deer with. I never shot it, as it was too nice, too minty, too close to 100% perfect, but once I sold it, I relinquished my option to decide how it should be kept. No hard feels on my end, 'cause he paid a fair price and was totally honest with me.
OTOH, I once sold a 99R in 243 to a man who said that he wanted it for his personal collection. Since we spoke often on the telephone, this was several years prior to this forum being around, I sold it to him for exactly what I had paid for it, since we were "friends". He almost immediately turned around and sold it for what I assume was a significant profit. I was really pi$$ed, 'cause I wouldn't have sold it in the 1st place, if he hadn't badgered me for weeks, moaning about how much he wanted/needed it for his personal collection. I will never sell him another rifle at any price and as a consequence of his duplicity, we have not spoken in years.

Here ya go. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-12-American-Rifl...=item35a7005d93Seen several dog 99s converted to 41 Remington (revolver) by a gunsmith who liked to do the impossible. They all worked perfectly. He also did Ruger #1s to 22 RF with an off center (at breech) bore like the Pope 22 RF Krags. He is now sitting at his bench, across the great divide, hopefully building guns with square bullets to shoot infidels.

I saw one today that was converted from 30-30 to 32 special. Butt stock cracked through (broken) at the action and for sale for $300. On the bright side, it had a tang sight. I left it laying there.

George,
I did not think YOU were bitching about someone rechambering a 99, as we had discussed it several times, but boy some ppl jumped right on ya.
Likewise, I did not find the article very enlightening at all... it basically says to make wildcats from existing family bases and really talks up 284 wildcats... the only two true conversions to non savage chamberings that I see him mention that are available as over the counter shells are 219 zipper (not sure you can buy this over the counter any more) and 22-250 which is really just a wildcat of the 250 that got popular, right?

22-250 which is really just a wildcat of the 250 that got popular, right? Yeah, pretty much right. It got "standardized" too since as with all wildcats there were variations. He does make the point though that the carriers for the rimmed cartridges are pretty much the same. While you're playing with your projects I'm thinking I'll get started on building a .32 Spl on one of the takedowns that I've got laying around. Should be an easy re-bore re-chamber for a burned out .303 barrel I've got laying around. Why .32 Spl? Because I can.
