Just got back from the range yesterday and very happy with the Ruger No.1's I took. I started out with a stainless steel No.1 in 25/06 that shot less than a one inch 5 shot group at 100 yards with Fusion 120 gr. ammo. Next I tried my new No.1 in 6.5x55 that did 1 1/4 inch groups with Remington 140 gr. Core Loks. My 300 H&H shot about a 1 inch groups with reloads useing 168 gr. barnes bullets. The point of this post is I can't believe how well the new No.1's do right out of the box. I wish I could say the same for the Ruger model 77. I don't think I'm going to buy another one.The only thing I do when I get a No.1 is loosen the fore arm and lightly tighten it up.

The only 77 I've had, or have, is the little 6mm Rem I've
had since 14 years old. It is a little tempermental,
would not shoot for crap with Rem or Win factory stuff,
80 or 100 grain. Started loading for it, and it refused to
shoot anything lighter than 100 grains. But finally tried
a 100 Hornady over H4831, and it shoots well, if not great.
I could see if I had not lucked up on something it would
group with, I would probably have a different outlook on it.

For me Ruger Model 77/Hawkeye that I have bought about 1/2 will shoot desent out of the box.The last one ,a Hawkeye LW in .257 Roberts shot like a shotgun most of the time. I have a older 270 with a boat paddle stock that will shoot a 1 inch group or 4 inch group depending on the day.I just sold a .260 Remington that shot good.I run about 50%. It's to bad, Ruger has a lot calibers in the Hawkeye I want to try,but don't want to take the chance. Thats the reason I spend a liitle more and buy a Number 1.My next Ruger No.1 is going to be in the .264 Win. mag.

The 6mm I had for a number of years, a Rem 788, was something like that. I only ever shot handloads in it and it did okay with lighter bullets, but I wasn't interested in it as a varmint rifle. It took H4831 with a Sierra 100 SMP to make it spin circles around the same hole, and it would - every time. Never shot the most recent M77, a pre-Hawkeye, in its factory configuration, but after having it rebored, it shoots very well, and the guy who did the reboring was right in his prediction. He said he had trouble with many Ruger stainless barrels and wouldn't guarantee that it would come out well. It didn't - it's rough and gnarly to look at, but it still shoots 250 Hornadys at around MOA.

I've never had a problem with my Ruger's out of the box , apart from the heavy trigger pull they have been pretty good for me . I will see how the No 1 goes this weekend as I pick up my first in .303b .
Regards.

Triggers are adjustable. All of mine are +-3 pounds except the one with the Canjar SST (worth 1/2 as much as the 7x57 it sits on)

My old #1 in .375 with the Kepplinger SST shoots better than I can. The first time it went to Africa I could put three 300 grain Hornaday solids and softs in a ragged hole from standing with a rest against a tree, but that was a LONG time ago

I've never had a Ruger that didn't shoot. I've had 10 or 11 over the years, and I was able to get them all to shoot 1" or better at 100 yards. Granted I hand loaded for all of them, but a couple were downright scary. I had a #1V in .223 and a #1B in .338 Win. Mag. that would do 1/2" every single time (but only 3 shots with that .338). And what kills me, is a 25/06 I sold that would beat those two quite handily on a good day. The only Rugers I ever tweeked were bolt actions that I still own. I free-floated the barrel of a 1980's M77R, and did the same for a M77 MkII in .270 - plus I droped a 3lb. Timney in that one.

Good shooting! As you experiment with different ammo, I suspect things will only get better for you.

Klikitarik,
I have an old Remmie 788 in 6mm Rem. I got the barreled action and my father put it into a Bishop stock. It shoots 80 gr. Powr Lokt HP's and 100 gr. CoreLokt PSP's using IMR-4350 quite well. It was my first centerfire rifle, and I got it because my father had an old Remington Model 722 in .244 Remington that shot great.
