Just took this one at 3:00 AM this morning (Sat.). The light at the left is street lighting from North Pole, I believe, and the moon is shown in the middle below the Auroras. Number 2 and number 3 were taken at other times and locations this week Camera is a Canon 40D, with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens wide open, around 400 ISO, and from 13-15 seconds exposures. 640 ISO on this one:

Yes, it's quite impressive! On high places such as the one I was standing on, when the Auroras are active like that it seems that you are in the middle of it (they look closer than what they really are). I took those last week after some solar flares that hit earth Wednesday and Thursday, except for the first one. This one I took Saturday when the Auroras were not longer very active. They appeared for about an hour, and then slowed down.

Ray. Very nice. I like the last best due to the angles of the more dominant tree lines and road leading to the "base" of the aurora tail.

Beautiful! Love the cabin in the last one.
Great photography is not about being in the right place at the right time, it is about putting yourself in the right place at the right time.

OOF due to trying to handhold for 2 seconds, but this display from last Hitch, was the brightest I'd ever seen. That despite the lights in proximity, much drowning them out. Same goes this shot(lights drowning the display),but I dig the contrast...............

Ray,those are some of the best examples of the northern lights I've seen. The contrast of the trees is excellent.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
Those who live in Alaska, and probably in Canada, will have another chance at the Auroras this weekend. The forecast is for "active" Northern Lights Saturday and Sunday nights. That's the way it was when i took the photos above. ------
Big Stick: Those are very nice examples considering that you didn't use a tripod!

Not to hi-jack the thread but, here`s a good site to keep tabs on the aurora forcast if any are interested. http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/auroraforecast/I wish I could be in a place where they occur often just to lay back and watch, let alone get photos as nice as those. I`ve seen them a few times on hunts in Canada similar to your pictures, but they are very rare around here (Mi), and short lived if they do occur.
