Marrying off the last kid tonight. All three boys will be gone. First time the house has been empty except for me an Mama in thirty some years. Course ain't none of them broke their dinner plates yet.

Ponyed up for a big feed last night for rehersal dinner. Fed folks I never had seen before, didn't know and probably don't want to know. Got that done.

Going tonight and set there like a hoot owl while the preacher does his business.

Empty nest time.

I know what you mean. Ben comes home long enough to run me outta shotgun and rimfire shells, clutter the place up, knock me down another rung on the feeding ladder, and then goes again.

Still miss him though...

Have a good time at the reception.

Grandkids are the reward for all that. Hope you get a bunch soon. We are still waiting and adopting any kid below 8 in the neighborhood. TM

You aren't done! Believe me, it will start all over
when the grandkids start coming! Enjoy the quiet while
you can.

I've told my kids I can't afford any more grandchildren!

BCR - thinking of you - especially appreciated the comments about people you don't know and probably don't care to - that isn't exclusive to weddings, of course. It pertains to just about any social situation not of your own choosing. The part about sitting like a hoot owl is also very apropos. You left out sitting there in clothing totally unfit for any even remotely human activity. Best, John

Hmm. My Dad told me that no matter how old we get we are STILL a pain in the ass (he's 84). Here's hopin' I'm a pain in his ass for another 20 years.

Sounds like after all the hoopla is over gonna be time to change into some boots and jeans, hop in the pickup and go check on the cattle. It's a social situation that most of us here would be far more comfortable with Boggy.

I'd venture you son is lucky to have that "ole hoot owl" in his corner. Congrats to all involved.

BCR--

My wife and I had two girls, the oldest single and out on her own now for six years since college and just married our youngest and helped move them across the state.

While I miss seeing my two girls on a daily basis, the "empty nest" has it's own perks. I think I'll get accustomed. It's the way things are supposed to go.

My sentiments exactly!
My Dad's 83, still at it, too.

I helped him put a Reese hitch on his Jeep this week. The damn hitch was free, I welded reinforcements into it, and then he wouldn't spend an extra couple bucks on new bolts and stuff to mount the thing.

Congratulation! Double congratulations if they married well, and I don't mean money. That's a tribute to you and the missus. We got our third and last one married off last November. She's our oldest, and it did ease my mind a bit as she found a good man who can take care of her, even though she is handling herself well among the big players in D.C. She's still my little girl. We've six grandkids from the other two already, all under 7 years old, five of them boys. All of them love to fish and scout for game. May you have the years and health to enjoy your kids in law.

Regarding empty nest, when our youngest left my wife and I looked at each other and listened to the empty house and I wondered what had made me count the years, back when he was born, till he would be gone. I couldn't remember what had been so important about being free from kids again. It was a LOT harder on my wife. One day we took off on a Sat. drive to hike an easy trail to a lake. Back at the car we decided to drive on farther, across the pass to eat supper in the nearest restaurant. Then we realized there was no one home, no need to let anybody know where we were, and we might as well stay over and drive back the next day. Free, but weird. (In our family, letting people know where you were and when you'd be home was always a courtesy rather than a checking up on people, and parents did it as much as kids.) So such freedom had to be relearned.

We do want to thank all you folks for the good wishes. The festivities come off and the kids are now well and truly hitched.

As I have often told I don't mind the actual skirmish so much but the scalp dance afterward sometimes gets to be a little much.

We was blessed by having Sonnie (NO) come down and join us. He couldn't stay long as he's still a little puny from his recent sick spell.

Wish some more of my cyber buds could have been there.

Momma is sleeping in and is plumb tuckered out. These things seem to be harder on women than men. I guess it is 'cause their baby is leaving. Baby hell, Jim is 27. Our other boy was his best man and the oldest one a groomsman.

People go nuts over these wedding things, you know. I was standing around sipping punch and eating peanuts and trying to look all paternalistic when this old gal from the (now) other side of the family comes up. I don't know who she is, distant aunt or cousin or something, I just call her the Turkey lady. I do that because that's what she looks like. Long, scrawney neck, beaky nose, blue head of hair and beady, close set eyes that appear to be intelligent but ain't if you know what I mean.

Turkey Lady says to me, " Oh, I'm just so happy, so happy, you know we have known and loved Laura (new bride) since she was a baby."

I say's "Well, that's good, we've only known Jim about two weeks."

Old gal looks at me and batts her eyes for a second or two and then wanders off to catch grashoppers or something I guess.

Anyway, thanks again to all for the good wishes.
