Just picked up a Winchester Model 100 in 308 cal manufactured in 1961. After careful inspection I noticed bulge in barrel 3-4 inches from muzzle. Can't get my money back so what are my options? Barrel is currently 22 inches and cutting 4 inches off would make it 18". I do not know the price of a new barrel in 308 but if I was to go that route could I just put a 243 Caliber barrel on it? Not sure what my best option is and don't want to sink much more money into it. I know it's not safe to shoot as is but the stock is in great shape and would like to make it shootable again. Thanks, Tom.

Should be no problem to switch cartridge from .308 to .243. You can price barrels out at the site below. You may be able to get a pre-fit to reduce installation costs some.

http://www.pac-nor.com/prefit/ Pac-Nor only does pre-fit for listed firearms. No semi-auto except AR style.

Very easy cheap fix would be to have the muzzle counterbored for just over 4"... Lop some of the useless part off the end if you like... But it is the cheapest way to eliminate the bulge...

I've shot a slightly bulged barrel and got surpisingly good accuracy. Feels weird when you clean it.

I can cut down the 22 inch barrel to 18 inches and recrown myself so there is no expense for that. I have some hesitation about doing that because this being a semi auto I'm afraid it might affect the cycling of the action. Anyone know if it will?. l

Should not cause any cycling issues...

A friend of mine has a Remington M700 in 7RM that has
a bulge in the barrel and it shoots fine. In fact I was
the one that noticed it when I was cleaning it for him.
Right away he started talking about a rebarrel or a new
rifle, gunsmith told him if it shoots good dont worry about
it.

You may be able to save yourself some dollars by shooting it before you cut anything. As been said previously, it may shoot just fine.

Thanks for the replies. I will try shooting it first and go from there as some have recommended. Hopefully it can hit a hog at 40 yards.
