Well...I'm sure it's to the point now where most of you don't know me. Those who do have probably forgot about me by now. I'm Stephanie, aka littlemissdeer. (also known to some as can't kill enuff) I was an active member of this and shooters.com for years and years. I went off after graduating highschool and joined the armed services, went and saw the word and learned all I could. In my days serving, however, I fell away from the things I once loved. So now I'm back to reclaim my place at the fire. I was once an excellent story-teller, and posted a weekly story for the fire to read. I'm going to renew my tradition with this weeks' story...

Lost in Nature
As I sat looking out from my porch I squinted at the sun's rays grazing my face. The day was hot and bright, with a little breeze now and again to cool my skin. I sat there reflecting on the morning's quest through the trails behind my parent's home. The trails I walked as a youngster years ago. I had walked through the woods there, scurrying through the pine branches in search of anything moving, anything hold life. I had caught lizards, snakes, beetles and the occasionaly case of poison ivy. Young and impressionable I had watched the way the woods cares for it's children. The way that the trees protected and hid the little ones below them. I remembered being small and thought of how these same trees had once guarded me from harm.
The forest was alive, it was spring and movement exploded from every direction. Birds, squirrels, rabbits...everywhere. I found my way through the winding paths to my old stand. It had been four years at least since I had last been to that place. My stand was still there, covered in moss. Looking around I saw that nothing had changed, though everything was different. The broken log twenty feet from the stand was covered in moss and ferns, brilliant green in the afternoon light. About ten yards off the path the deer took from the soybean field to the thicket was as fresh and deep as I remembered, though it now was covered in patches by thick bunches of wild blueberry bushes. The little reflectors I used to make my way to the stand when I still got turned around in the woods had been grown around and barely showed through on some of the trees I had so carefully attacked them to. I sat down and waited to watch life move. A squirrel raced from a tree nearby, jumping into the tree above me and raining a leaf or two down onto my head. The pine needles beneath me were warm and sharp, I ran my hands through them, then pawed my way through them to the dark, rich earth below. I picked up a handful of this dirt and thought of the time I fell from the stand...a klutz I was when I was young. Perhaps this is why my father never made a stand more then 8 feet for me...maybe because I was always a little afraid of heights. I laid my back onto the steps of my old stand and drifted into a short slumber, then awoke and made my way home.

Welcome Back, Step!!<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Great to hear from you again.
Lots of new faces here, but most of the old stand bys are still around too. your log is right where you left it.

Is your commitment all done now? It can't be that long already, can it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Watcha doing in SW Florida? I thought Eastern MD was home.

LMD,

Great to hear you made it back safe and sound. Most of us who moved here are still hanging around the fire. Turns out to have been a very good move. Your place at the fire has been preserved awaiting this return.

Welcome home Little Miss and once again thanks for the service. I too have a daughter in the military and am proud. It must be good to be back in the "saddle" and even though this is the first time I've seen you ride your form is good. Waiting patiently for the next installment...
