I can buy a new VX1 1-4x20mm for 200.00 or a like new vxIII 1.5-5x20mm for 300.00 which scope do I choose. Money is an issue.

I have a VX-1 (or -2) 1-4 on my Guide Gun. It's the shotgun/ml version with coarse crosswires and closer range parallax adjustment. It's worked well for me for quite some time, more than ten years.

I've got the Burris scout scope. I've been pleased with it.

I would definitely do a heavy reticle.

You might even consider a good red dot.

I've used both. I think the VXIII is worth the extra $100 over the VXI and you will be glad down the road for the extra expense.

Better glass and click adjustments are the biggest features over the cheaper scope.

VX-3 is better than VX-III. The latest Leupy scopes have better glass than the older ones.

I've got the VXII 1-4 20mm on mine with the German #1 in Leupold QR Mounts. I replaced the rear sight with a sight from the Cowboy 45/70 and can print a 2" group with the irons at 75 if need be.

Thank you....These all wear Leupolds now as do all my rifles. This was a pic of my "Wood Stocked" rifles from a year ago....I've since added a 308MX wearing a 2.5-8 36mm to this lineup. The 10/22 (Duplex)and 257 Roberts (Heavy Duplex) RSI's both wear 2-7 33mm and the 270 with the nice wood wears a 3-9 40mm all in Silver.

That's a factory Ruger M77 MKII in 270....I bought the paddle stocked rifle for $175 and the factory wood stock on here for $200 I believe....so after refinishing the stainless I may have $400 in it total.......And it shoots 130TTSXs very well

Good choice. I have a 1-4x VX II shotgun scope on my guide gun. It's been on it since 2003. Been all over the US, and a trip to Africa in 08. It's a shotgun scope, with the heavy duplex crosshairs. That leupie has served mr well for a number of years.

I have a bunch of Leupold scopes along with a few Burris and older Redfields but the scope I have on my 1895SS is a 40 buck 4X TRASHCO (Tasco) bought at a yard sale.


Shooting a steady diet of heavy loadings that resulted in nerve damage to my shoulder has failed to damage a scope that most guys here wouldn't consider.

Great clear, rugged El Cheapo scope in the woods on a hard kicker. Who woulda thunk ?

63 grains of Benchmark under a 300 grain Partition.
