Sounds like something needs adjustment, I know you can adjust the clutch free play. Go here and do a search. http://www.hondaforeman.com/index.php

I'm pretty sure it's the shift solenoid that's going bad on your bike. This is a common problem with the earlier ES bikes. The part is under the seat and runs about $100. Most folks want to clean the contacts before they spend the $$$. Most of the time it doesn't help but it's certainly worth a try.

TC1 is on it but also check for moisture in the plug in connection.......This was my particular problem and a shot of silicon spray fixed it.

I have a 2001 Rancher ES that had the same problem. The dealer decided after 4 months in their shop that they could not fix it. I had heard the shifter solenoid could be the culprit, so I ordered one, I think at the time it was $45. Problem solved. A couple of years later I had the same problem again, so I replaced the solenoid again. Been shifting fine ever since.
