Just watched Hotel Rawanda last night, WOW, powerful movie, great acting compelling. Worth a look.

A government is the most dangerous threat to mans rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Yep. Hard to imagine 10,000 people killed a day.

Yepper, Don Cheadle deserves an Oscar for his body of work. Well worth watching for is his recent movie "Crash" about 24 hours in LA, a good movie despite the archtypical sleezy gun store owner in the beginning.

FWIW Hotel Rwanda gave me Peace Corps flashbacks about my old neighborhood (although no one was chopping each other up where I was). Tell ya what Shreck, if I should ever run into you in BFE West Africa we'll sit under a tree in a village with the locals and drink palm wine (fermented palm tree sap) from a gourd amid the flies and dust, shooting the breeze. Every one drinks from the same gourd, refilled for one after the other, so try not to sit where you'll get it right after the old guy with the persistent hacking cough. Oh yeah, if you're REALLY slick, you flip the residue out onto the ground when you're done so that it makes an audible "pop" when it hits the dust. I'll buy the first round

I watched Hote Rawanda a couple of weeks ago. Really makes one proud that we are a member of the UN doesn't it?

It's amazing what people can do to other people.

I have not seen the movie, read the accounts and heard stories from the reporters/intl networks news crews that were off the un-nerving scale. Really makes you wonder about the blue hats purpose...

I saw it when it first came out, mostly because of Bird's word on it. It made me want to buy more ammo for the cellar!

I'll never understand Africa.

reelman,

Several years ago I heard a lecture by someone who as a child was a true believer in Hitler. During WW II, when she was a teen, she was captured by the Russians. To make a long stroy short... After a couple of years she and another girl escaped back into Germany. They ran into the first farm house they came to. Instant terror filler her. She was already inside and had closed the door behind her. What was so terrifying? It was filled with G.I.s. They offered the girls food and cleared all the guys out of one bedroom and let them sleep. The other girl fell off to sleep. She stayed awake to watch, knowing these guys were wrose than the Russians. The Russians would rape you and slap you and be right up front about being brutal. Apparently these guy were worse. These guys enjoyed playing some kind of mind game and she was not falling for it. The next moring when her friend woke up and started talking, some of the Americans came in and brought them some breakfast. After they ate, they were allowed to leave. She kept wondering when the hammer would fall.

As they walked away from the house, she was afraid to look back thinking it would trigger the trap. When they were far enough away she thought she could take evasive action she looked back. Something in her head cracked and she experienced a paradigm shift. All the Americans were hanging out the windows or doors or in the yard smiling and waving. They had something she had never heard of and determined to visit America to discover it.

She discovered we, at that time anyway, experienced the Judeo/Christian world view. Churches, Elk Lodge, Moose Lodge, Shriners, AAA... All these organizations, in those day, gave of themselves expecting nothing in return. She shortened it to one word...Love.

Give us a few more decades of secularism and we will be as bad as anything the world has to offer now.

"Sigh"... OK you guys are invited too, but I'm only picking up the tab for the first round (should come out to about $0.05 American)

First let me say that I currently wear the blue hat so I have some knowledge of what I speak.

The UN is NOT a humanitarian organization. It is a MONEY making organization. Pure and simple.

The Kosovo Albanian/Serbian conflict was raging in the same time frame. It is generally agreed by both sides that there were 20,000 casualties total.

At the same time 1 million Rwandans were slaughtered and the only UN action was to withdraw the troops it commanded on the ground so the slaughter could go on with out witnesses.

What was the difference?
Some have said race. That white lives were worth more than black. I dont think this is correct.
Some have said location. That the conflict and the refugees would spill over in to Europe. Slightly more merit there. But not quite.

MONEY. The US and UK/ NATO would put up the troops and the cash. Money would flow. No one was paying for Rwanda. So the world looked the other way.
that one African man, armed only with wit guile and a set of steel balls saved all those lives.

Birdwatcher tallied of an Oscar for this film. If there is any justice in this world he will receive the Nobel prize. But there is precious little justice.

Lewis

And dont get me going on the fact there is no US interest here.

Considering the recent winners, I'm not sure I'd consider the Nobel Peace Prize much of an honor these days.
