Took my four year old out on the boat today to "rip some lips" as he's now fond of saying. After an hour of catching shad we moved on to catch a gator. I found a nice little honey-hole and rigged up the Ugly stick and chucked the bait over the side and set the pole in the holder. I was teaching my son how the "clicker" works and if he should hear it going off it means a fish is swimming off with the bait. About a minute later I hear a ziiiiiip (pause) ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip. I grab the pole from the holder and waited for another run & tug and jerked back to set the hook, ............zzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiipp. The Penn reel screamed and 20 yards behind the boat the fish breaks the water in a spectacular leap and tail dance. My first thought was "Oh, S--t, we're in trouble. Whose got who? I'm hanging on and the reel is peeling off line, I look back at my son and his eyes are as big as saucers. I can tell he doesn't know what to do and is scared. About that time the fish makes a dash upstream towards the boat and I'm pumping as fast as possible and I see the line pick up speed and tell my son to "watch this" just as the fish leaps again 10 yards to the side of the boat. He freaks!~ The battle is on and it was an arm shaking, pole bending ordeal. Several minutes and line ripping runs later the sturgeon succumbs and is next to the boat. I grab the leader and see the size and know it's a legal keeper (between 42" and 60") my only concern is it might be too big. A quick stretch of the tape and it shows 55", this one is going to the grill. One of the best days I've ever had fishing thanks to my fishing partner, what a joy it was to be with him and catch this monster.

Agree, sturgeon is wonderful eathing. Cooked quick in a pan with butter and capers, oh man it's good.
Oh yeah, they leap. A sight to see is an oversize get airborne, a 10 foot 400lb fish out of the water doing a tail dance and head shake is spectacular.

Spike, happy for you! That is something that you will think about and smile when he is grown up. You never regret the time, money, and effort spent on memories. Best, John

Tell us what your boy's reaction was! It has got to be priceless!

Too cool and pictures to boot. Well done.
Deep-fry it the same as Halibut, using the same batter. Sturgeon remains my favorite table fare, with Striper not too far behind...................

Very nice ... my question is, if its over 60"s its not legal and you have to release it?? If so, what is the reasoning behind this law?
Thanx!

Thanx! I imagine it is because the bigger ones have reached maturity and are the breeding stock. Hopefully I am close.
