I have had 2 guns with muzzlebrakes 1 a browning with a boss it was somewhat tolerable and the had a Holland Quick Dicharge on it and it was unbearable. Most manufacturers talk about diverting gases and not actual DB levels. What are all of your thoughts on this.

A quiet muzzle brake means suppressor to me.

Quiet muzzle brake is the ultimate oxymoron.

That was my immediate thought too.

I have an idea for a new business venture. I will offer to "quiet down those annoyingly loud muzzle brakes" by tapping and plugging those pesky holes. Paid in advance, of course. Our motto will be "We're not happy until you're not happy".

Now let's just think about this a minute. Wouldn't it be great if someone invented, and made available, a quiet muzzle brake? Do you think it is impossible? I think it just hasn't been developed yet. It sounds like a great idea to me, and a possible gold mine of a business idea. We already have "quiet" and "recoilless" (more or less). Now one of you entrepreneurial types get to it and put both of them together in an affordable, not-too-unsightly package. Maybe I'll just do it my dang self.

I have always thought firing my 45 1911 w/out hearing protection was more painful than my .300 Magnum with muzzle break. Anybody know how a handgun compares to a braked/un braked rifle in terms of dbs?

The late Dave Gentry was one of the gunsmiths who developed what he called a "quiet" muzzle brake. I knew Dave pretty well, and his model had the ports angled slightly away from the shooter. It was indeed quieter than most brakes, but was still LOUD.

At one point Dave put a sleeve on the outside of his brake. After gas came through the ports, it was diverted frontward, away from the shooter. This was a LOT quieter, but also didn't reduce recoil all that much.

The physics of a conventional brake preclude being really quiet, especially if they actually reduce recoil to any extent.

A suppressor works, though....

Yep, but it's illegal to use them for hunting. I've got one for a 30 caliber, fun to shoot, illegal to hunt. Go figure.

Illegal to hunt game animals. I believe you can hunt non game animals like hogs or coyotes in some states.

A long time. Just pick the right one for the chambering.

Yep. There are some very fine suppressors made these days. I've hunted pigs and coyotes with them, and they work very well.

Have also hunted big game with suppressed rifles in other countries, where it's often considered good manners to use one, especially near towns. Sometimes it's even mandatory.

Here, however, the general public (and especially the anti-gun and anti-hunting people) think suppressors are a dangerous plot of some sort.

Some muzzle brakes are quieter than others but they are all loud. The only true way to make it quiet is to use a silencer and sub-sonic ammo.
