I have always been a 30 caliber fan but in the last few years I have started to work with the 244 and 25 caliber rifles and can't be any more pleased, when it comes to deer hunting and smaller game, I reach for for the 25-06 and 243, don't beat you up but I like the flat shooting and everything i have zapped went down. Going to take a hog with it this fall and still playing with some loads but the 117 grain sierra is like lighting in a bottle. 20 years ago i would have scoffed at the idea of hunting her in WV with all the brush, if it wasnt' 30 or bigger, I didn't own one, so now i'am older and wiser and have found a special place in heart for these rounds. Anyone have any stories like mine, drop me a note!!

I have always been a 30 caliber fan and if it said magnum behind the 30 it was just that much better.

I have always had alot of rifles but if I went to the woods it said 30 something on it. I finally bought a Sako 25-06 and could not be more pleased with it. I shoot 100 grain bullets out of it and it kills well. I can't believe it took me so long to go to a caliber that is nice to shoot.

Better late, than never. ;O)

Been killin' stuff with the 25-06 since the late '70s. No complaints thus far.

Un-fricken-believable. (I used to use the 117 GameKing also.)

I have shot more game with the .25-06 than any other calibre and absolutely no complaints. I prefer the 100g Nolser accubond. GRF

Gunshop in my area has a Remington 40X in .25-06 that I would

Absolutely. Makes a 25/06 think it is a 300 Weatherby. Whole 'nother notch in performance and capabilities.

Great cartridge and wish I had one when I was young. My son has used one with great effect and my daughter has borrowed his prior to having her 260. Ours love the 115 combined technologies and nothing has survived it. The 100 TTSX would make it that much better but have a ton of the 115s on hand.

wvhunter,

What you have discovered is not exactly a secret. The .25-06 is one of the most underrated big game calibers out there. Many just dismiss it as a hard-kicking varmint/dual game cartridge, but the fact is, it is accurate, flat shooting, doesn't kick, and with 100 gr. bullets (esp. TSX) it hits with more energy than you would expect. I started paying attention to the .25-06's long range potential when I found I could knock over the ram silhouette at 500 meters with the 100 gr. bullet. Everyone else was shooting 7mm or bigger.

My only complaint is that the 100 gr. tends to be a little wind sensitive at long range, and the 120 gr. can't get going fast enough out of a 22" barrel. The 115 gr. Nosler BT is excellent (shot my smallest ever 300 yd. group with it), but as I get older I am getting less inclined to shoot edible game with lead core bullets, or use it where the carcass can be scavenged by eagles or condors.

It is right up there with the great .270 Win. as a deer/sheep/antelope/elk round (my opinion only is that it is a little light for bulls unless you are a cool, careful shot).

Never shot or owned a 25-06, but a friend of mine has 3 of them. He told me you definitely want a 24"bbl in the 25-06. My question is what is the recoil compared to a 22"bbl 270, shooting a 130grain bullet, with rifles that weight about the same?

I been shooting a 25-06 for over 12 years and loved the rifle for deer, antelope and the once in awhile groundhog at the other end of the bean field. I guess I just got bored with it's ability and accuracy and decided to build a .264/06 (6.5/06) for you metric fans, was going to take it's place.

I have not noticed one once of killing better over the 25/06 as far as caliber's goes on deer size game animals. The 6.5/06 does handle larger bullets but is not as accurate as the triple bore. My son wants a 270 Winchester that I have in the vault and I am going to trade back for my old 25-06 simply put.

LESS RECOIL with the 25/06!

I've loaded from 75gr HPs to 120gr HPBTs in three different 25-06s, going back to the late 70s and early 80s. Mostly Sierras years ago and 100gr Nosler Btips now, which is all I currently use in that cartridge.

Have killed deer with 100s, 117s and 120s. In my humble opinion, this cartridge shines with a good 100gr bullet and I see little need for much of anything else, for killing deer and the occasional whack at a far off woodchuck?

Recoil from the bench or bipod is easy to abide, even for someone like me with bad sholders. It's accurate, fast and flat shooting, so it suits me fine.

Having killed deer with a 25-06 from about 75 yards and out a tad beyond 450 yards, I consider it to be a "fairly" useful cartridge. ;O)

I have always shot 100 grain bullets in mine. Either TTSX or Sierra's. I always figure if I was going to shoot 75 grain bullets I would use my .243 and if I was going to use 120 grain bullets I might as well shoot my .270.

I sure like mine a lot. I know the Alaskan Ti doesn't get much love around here, but mine in 25-06 sure shoots. With 100 grain factory TSX ammo its a lazer. It sure does things to antelope when you hit them.

Ive got a 25 Gibbs but dont shoot it much. Truth be told, Id rather have a 25-06. My dad has one in a tang safety Ruger with the heavier-than-sporter barrel. I have seen him make some unbelievable shots on deer and antelope with it. I keep wanting to buy a 25-06 but honestly, the only 25-06 I want is the one my dad has. Cant wait until that day he passes it down to me! That rifle is #1 priority in finding a good load for it this summer. We dont know if the barrel is shot out or what but something is not right and its not shooting like it should.

Big 25-06 fan here, and have been since 1992. Best attribute is perceived recoil isn't comensurate with it's devastating performance on game. Great cartridge!

That all being said, I picked up a 257 Roy last December and have to say, the 25-06 has been replaced as my favorite .257 caliber.
