Any one know if the material is thick enough for drilling and tapping the receiver on an 11-87 Super Mag. I heard it was too thin for this. Anyone ?

if you want it top mounted then yes the receiver is really to thin at the front where the barrel extension fits. i wouldn't do it,wouldn't even be able to get two complete threads let alone more. some guys drill and tap into the barrel extension there and claims it improves accuracy as the scope base screws also lock the barrel in place.

I just mounted one for a customer, It had about 5 threads for a 8-40 screw. Worked great. Actually did a 870 for him as well.

Seeing as how the super mag turkey guns do come D&T from the factory, I don't see it being a problem. My gunsmith just D&T'd my 870 youth model 20 gauge, no problemo...

What kind of accuracy improvement are we talking about on these shotguns?

I've drilled and tapped these receivers and have never had any problem.

I understand that the thickness is greater on the 870's than the 11-87's that my concern. If I can get 5 threads as mentioned that would be fine. Never heard of drilling into the barrel extension. I would like to hear more on this.Camo weaver type bases are hard to come by for the 11-87/870. I have had no luck in finding one, any suggestions ? Thanks for the info so far guys,OA

The black weaver base for the 1187 isn't too bad on a camo gun. Here's one I used to have, with a 2.5x20 Leupold on top.
