I saw a 01 Jeep Wrangler, straight 6, 5 speed manual transmission today that caught my eye.
Wife wants me to pull a Coleman pop up tent trailer for week end camping trips and week long vacations.
Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience using a Jeep Wrangler to tow something with? I don't want to waste money buying the Jeep just to have to replace it with something better suited to tow the Coleman.
Any advice about towing weight capabilities for Jeep Wranglers would also be helpful. I don't know what the Coleman weighs yet, that is next on my list tomorrow.

Wranglers aren't rated to tow very much. I'm thinking 2000-2500 lbs is about it. I've never understood why. I've had a couple of Wranglers in the past and they did fine with a utiity trailer and around 1500lbs or so on it. I never tried anything heavier so I'm not sure how it would handle it.
Most people don't really want the truth.

It may be due to the short wheelbase. They are built sturdy, but may not be able to safely handle a lot of weight in a bumper pull trailer.

I have a 2001 wrangler 5 speed 6 and pulled a 13 foot Boler trailer with it no problems. Also pull a trailer with 4 wheeler even more and not a problem. enough power off road and on highway I do the speed limit approx. 60-65 mph. You will have to down shift on hills but can't have everything!
Have had good luck with Jeep so far.

You will be running in 4th gear on the highways and shifting to 3rd on the hills. If this is a stock setup Jeep! The first thing you want to find out is what is the rearend gear ratio. If it is .373 gearing you will be like I stated, running in 4th & 3rd gear a lot.
My Jeep Grand Cherokee can pull 2500 pounds on the highway "Out Of Overdrive" but not much more and stay at 65mph on highway. It has .373 gears in the rearend and the 4.0 Liter engine with auto trans. The salesman told the wife it was rated to pull 5000 pounds but no way in hell can it do that and stay above 45mph on the highway.
Once I pulled 3000 pounds with it and I had to take the back roads home because it would not keep up with interstate highway traffic simply put. I would say that 2000 pounds would be MAX for that Jeep.

Get the I6 and you shouldn't have a problem with a pop up. Get a LJ Rubicon and they are rated for 3500 and have 411 gears

I used a Cherokee for about 15 years with a 7'er,we call them tent-trailers,same thing.It had the I-6, 5sp and 3.07 gears,no problem at all pulling up mountains,no wind resistance. But stopping in traffic, you had to be careful. I highly recommend electric brakes for the trailer.
