in 10 yrs of hunting 30yards -125 yards,, i never attempted a shot longer,, even if one presented its self i would pass? some speak of 300-400yard shoots,, i dont even know what those distances look like,, at 47 i keep it where its been 30-125,, i love to hear some stories ,,ALL stories of ant shots longer,,
and am i alone? Do you do many Pronghorn hunts? Not saying that short shots are not available, but if you hunt Pronghorns much, they will show you quickly what 300 yards looks like. Most of the time there is nothing but the occasional sage brush between us. I would say my average Mule deer shot is at about 175 yards, whitetail at closer to 80. Antelope is closer to the mule deer, sometimes its 150 and often its more.

Whitetail with bow 4-25 yards, average around 14 yards.
Whitetail with rifle 7-370 yards, average around 120+ yards. I've been hunting big ag-fields in north MO for 14 years or more so I am set up on wide open bottom land. This year's deer were shot at 310, 240, and 300yrds. I knew the shots would be like that when I decided to hunt that piece of land.
The thing about this type of hunting land, is that you typically get shots at inside 40 yards, or over 170 yards. Not much in between. They are either in the line of cover you are in, or out in the distance.

I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

Depends on whether I'm here..Hangun shot to 150 yds Or here..hangun shot to about as far as you can shoot...most of my deer are taken from 35yds to 350 depending on what I'm shooting. Can't wait till my Sharps arrives will be using it on some long range shots from this stand!! I've been told by ET that a 45/110 will shoot around the curvature of the earth!!

i hunt missouri and depending on where i hunt shots are anywhere from 20 yrds to 600 yrds (i can't do 600)but 90% of all my deer taken so far have been between 60-100 yrds. i have a couple deer though i took at 200 yrds and a few at about 130 or so but due to my deer hunting the first 25 yrs in hard ozark mountain terrain, shots where never over 100. northern Missouri is a whole different planet though.
Help keep our sport going. take a kid outdoors!

Most of my shots on whitetails are ~50 yard. "Average" would get skewed by the occasional outlier but the vast majority are between 50-75 yards.

6 inches, ok ,,i need to hear that story!!,, please,, did you think you missed?lol It was a damp windy day and I was moving slow into the wind through a thick grove of head high young fir trees. As I started to break out of the trees into a small clearing I looked down to see where my next step would be and the toes of my boots were about a foot from the back of a 3 by 4 whitetail buck that was intent on watching the far side of the clearing. I verry slowly turned my rifle to the back of his head took the safety off and shot from the hip. No meat lost on that buck. I thought he had been shot by someone else but there was not even a scratch on him. Just a once in a life time day and I had no clue that he was there.

Arizona is big, open country. You can't close the distance sometimes.
My average shot distance is about 250 yards. The shortest distance for my over 30 years of hunting here was 110 yards. Longest was 624 yards.

I try to make it such that its not over about 150 but it doesn't always work, but since most of what I shoot is does and trash bucks, I can generally make it work out to 100 or less. Of course I have run out way on past that now and then.

20 to 40 yards for deer, elk and bear in W. OR for me.
My dad has joked he had to push deer away with the buttstock before he could shoot them

I hunt in the woods of Minnesota. I would say average is about 40-50 yards. The shots generally dont take great marksmenship, but on the other hand, many goof them up.
What you do today is important, you are trading a day in the rest of your life for it.
