Again, I am sorry. Guess I need to learn the pecking order on this site.

I'll even help Swampy out on the refinish issue !

You can duplicate that finish with modern technology. The hardest part is getting off the old stuff. It takes serious (use outdoors) strippers.

Once you get down to bare wood restain with a non oil based stain. sand, stain etc until you get to 600 wet/dry.

Then respray the stock with automotive clear coat and you'll get the high gloss. It is a bit smoother then the original but high, high gloss and very durable.

An example:

Minwax spray on gloss lacquer (spray can) will also give you the "look" but is not as durable as the clear coat.

You can then have the checkering recut to make it "real" and it will look quite handsome.

All the metal is 99% and the wood is maybe 85%. I hate to change the scope, so I'm going to try to use it. Eye relief and position seem much more critical than with a modern scope and the crosshairs are harder to see. I'm considering a Leupold Gloss finish 2-7X33.

Nice rifle. I used a K4 for about 20 years and it always delivered the goods for me. I still have it. I say shoot it.

I think it's pretty sexy and this is coming from winchester guy grin. I gotta start liking remingtons because RDFinn won't sell me any more scopes if I don't cry laugh

Got to hand it to Swampy he sure takes Purty pictures. I thought he had purchased a pre-64, did not realize Remington styled their earlier and better rifles off the pre 64.

As John Barsness says, the Model 700 drove the last nail in the coffin of the pre-64 Model 70.

I have owned more of those old 700 ADL turds then I care to think about. The impressed checkering and RKW bowling pin finish didn't impress me as a teenager and doesn't now. They did however shoot.

Agreed on the shooting part. I have a 70s vintage ADL 25-06, but the guy I sold it to years ago, refinished the stock. Now mine again, but I don't recall it having the glossy RKW "bowling pin" finish on it, when it was original?

Also have an old El Paso K4, but that's on another rifle. Nitrogen or not, it has never fogged in cold, rainy weather, but I'm not all that fond of them wee crosshairs.

This is an interesting quote with alot of potential interpretations. Im courious as to what this means to you Swampman700. I think I know what it means from a strictly economic and marketing stand point of the era but what were some of the technological and estheic implications? I would welcome others thoughts as well.

thanks

More than one person has been made a fool of by misquoting JB here.

How about a citation for that quote?

Don't 'spose he's gone with multiple JB quotes now, to try and gain some semblence of instant groupie gravitas, do ya?

Stranger things have happened here, from slightly stranger people.

Now swampy I hope you have noticed how for the most part everybody been positive and had good things to say about your Remington. Now if I had started a thread and named it "I really like this rifle" and posted a picture of a 20 year old Howa what would you have had to say? I hope your smart enough to get the point. Nice find on the Remington
