The thread on the Ruger 1911 got me to thinking. And that can be dangerous to my wallet.

I have small hands & like the way the 1911 fits, but I am not in love with the .45 ACP. Nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't appeal to me that much. My question is, does anyone make a 1911 in .40 S&W? I love the cartridge. I could even do a 10mm auto. I am not interested in getting one in 9mm. I already have a SigSauer in 9mm and that is enough.

I believe STI offers a couple of versions in 40S&W that get favorable reviews. I do not have personal experience with them. I think Kimber and Springfield both used to but I didn't see a version in their current lineup.

Went to their web site & they have several models and at pretty decent prices. It seems like I can get one for well under $1500. Thank you.

Para-Ordinance used to make a .40 also, but I don't know if they still do. Personally - I'd skip the 40 "Short and Weak" if I wanted something other than .45 or 9mm, and go straight to a 10mm. Kimber or Dan Wesson is where I'd probably look.

A friend has a Trojan on order in 9mm. If he likes it he will likely get a 40 S&W next. He handled the Trojan in 45ACP and liked it.

Colt did make a run of .40 S&W Gov't Models about 12 years ago. They only made about 1500 or so IIRC, and they are now collectible. I have an Elite 10/40 which is a limited edition Combat Elite with both 10mm and .40 cal barrels. The compact model, the Defender, was also available at one time in .40. All of them are somewhat collectible.

Colt has re-issued the 10mm Delta Elite, and one could easily fit a .40 barrel to it.

I would not trade my .38 Super 1911 for a 10mm.

I had one of the first Delta Elite's and it was a great gun. At one time I also had an IAI (AMT) "Javelina" in the 10. I gotta agree with the others that the 10 trips my trigger much more than a 40 in the 1911 platform. All that said, my "other" caliber in the 1911 right now is a 38 Super.

If the recoil from the .45 ACP round bothers you, don't go to a 10mm. It's worse, easily. I'd consider a .38 Super. The .40 S&W is very close in recoil to the .45 ACP. E

A 40 cal Glock (lighter gun) is a lot less pleasant to shoot, IMO, than a 1911, especially with 185gr.

The Super is a nice cartridge, alright, but the Centimeter (as Cooper called it) is a hoot. I have two of them, and will probably add a couple more. With decent handloads and a 9 round CMC magazine, your 1911 basically becomes a 10 shot .357 magnum.

Nothing at all says you have to run a 10mm full tilt all the time, either. If you get a 10, you can ease off the fullbore loads and have an easy equivalent to the .40. Just an opinion, of course..............

I almost always ran my 10mm at roughly .45 equivalent, so the gun would last longer (200gr @925fps, or thereabouts). It was easier on my hands and the gun.

If you want a .40S&W, get one in a BHP. Better fit for the cartridge.

If you want a 1911, go with a Super or a 10mm, if for some reason you can't like the .45ACP.

Know a cop, long dead, who carried the Super Cocked and locked. Popped a gunsel right in the forehead from about 30 feet one dark summer's eve! A .22 would have worked...but it was a Super and the results were dramatic, though the rounds were ball. Keep in mind, this was in the 60s. I wasn't there, but he was my undersheriff in the late 70s.
