[Linked Image][Linked Image][Linked Image][Linked Image][Linked Image] Eyes uncovered, still have to do fins and habitat. (stand). Gonna be pretty minimal. Walnut base with a few pieces carved to look like shale. Concentrating on the fish. Gonna be way up on a mantle anyway!

fantastic work.

Question, I had a friend who did this many years ago. He used a wood burning tool with special tips to burn each scale in. Is that how you do it?

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Yup. I freeze the fish, do a "rubbing" with the side of a pencil, and make scale tips to match. Of course, after a while, you have enough sizes, you can just match them up. Brookies are a little different. Their scales are very small and soft. The best way I have found to do the scales on a Brookie is to carve a reverse image in the end of a brass rod, and gently press them in. That way, there is no hard edge. A much softer look. Either way, it's a great excuse for drinking. Tedious work.

Great looking fish, but it sure does not look like Steelie to me.

He may be offended.

That is outstanding. I once knew a gentleman that did lifesized ducks. One would swear that you could see the feathers move in the wind.

The fish was a hen, but had a lot of male characteristics. That is why my boy wanted a carving of it. Kind of an oddball. The Rosie O'Donnell of Steelhead.

Great work! It looks like a nice retirement hobby, one that I'd enjoy. Is there books you recommend? Tools?

Nice Arawana in the back aquarium too.

The only thing missing is a fly in its mouth and a busted tippet dangling from it...

That's not right at all. Where's the yellow shirt and the Savage 99?
