Have a chance to get a 45-70 with a micro groove barrel. Just wondering what the accuracy would be compaired to ballard rifling. I will be shooting jacketed bullets most likly. Thanks.

Same samo. Now if ya want to use CAST slugs, the Ballard rifling is a LOT more forgiving.

Yup, if you're shooting jacketed bullets, you'll be fine with a micro-groove barrel. Cast bullets mat or may not shoot well or may just require more experimentation.

Sizing the bullet correctly is critical for micro grooves. Do it right and they WILL shoot very well. The Ballard is not as sensitive. For the jacketed bullets, micro works superbly well.

I have listened to this debate for years and I think the definitive answer is:
"Sizing the bullet correctly is critical for micro grooves. Do it right and they WILL shoot very well. The Ballard is not as sensitive. For the jacketed bullets, micro works superbly well."

Pope and others used "microgroove" rifling in their barrels with cast bullets years ago and got superb accuracy.
