You pour bacon drippings and such through the strainer part there to purify/clean it, and then you could reuse your drippings for cooking and such.

When I was growing up, my mother and my grandmother both had a matching set of salt and pepper shakers, and a matching bacon grease tin that sat on the stove. They were tin with black tops.
