looks like i may be able to score one for a decent price, and was wondering the pro's and con's from those that have used one and on what ?
seems to me it would be a great open country scope for a moderately fast cartridge.

I don't have one, but would love to run across one at a reasonable price. I did see one on Ebay awhile back, but it sold for far more than I'd pay. I do have a couple of M8 10x scopes and really like them but an 8x sounds great for a walking predator rifle.

I have one on my Cooper M57 .22LR Sporter. I love it.....as it is super clear, the AO takes out potential parallax at rimfire yardage, and it cost $150 at a gun show. I'd use it on any of my varmint rifles up to the .17 MACH IV. Mine is in great condition, but the only other one I've seen was beaten. I bet they haven't produced that scope since the 70's but don't know for sure.
As far as big game scope, I'd run it in open country but not in the thick stuff if I had a choice.

Here's one on a Model 70 in 243 Winchester. I really like the older Leupold fixed scopes, they balance well and have more than adequate optics.

I have 2, one sits on my M77V 220 Swift and does pd's on demand it has the CPC crosshair(tapered). The other was a regular Duplex crosshair and spent much time on various .223's I've had. I peddled the last 8x Weaver that was on my 700V and was about to return the 8x Leupold to the 700 v when I spotted a Vari X 2 3x9 with the superfine crosshairs and a Lee Dot instead. Bought it and mounted it on the 223 700V. So my 2nd 8x Leupold is floating at the moment. They are excellent and have enuf field of view for running coyotes also. I have used one as a test scope many times on different guns because they are dead reliable. The 2nd one just might end up on my M70 300 Win Mag that occ. goes praire hunting with me. They are excellent. Magnum Man

I've been using mine on my .264 "Westerner" for several years now with great success. I put a Stoney Point target knob on it and have used it to harvest antelope out to 775 yards thus far. The duplex reticle is of the fine variety and has been perfectly adequate for long range shooting to at least those ranges. I have contemplated sending it in for M1 or CDS treatment but haven't gotten it done yet as the Stoney point hasn't let me down yet, and it is so easy to go back to "original".
I too picked up another recently and have it sitting around waiting for just the right rifle. Another good one is the 7.5X which is basically just the same thing without the AO... don't seem to see as many of those around however.
Make the purchase! I don't think you will be dissatisfied. Mine were all purchased for$150-200 FWIW.

I had one for a while, and really tried to like it, but never quite warmed up to it.
It didn't do anything "better", or even as good as, so many other choices.
I like to still hunt for deer, and am pretty settled on something like the 2.5-8X, or 2-7X. I can turn them way down while moving, and still have the option of cranking them up if on stand. So, the 8X never even had a chance there.
Tried it groundhog hunting for a while. I like lots of magnification on my hog rifles, and pretty much have either 6.5-20X or straight 24X on all of them. The 8X wasn't enough magnification to matter for that game, so it never really made it there either.
If I use a fixed power scope, it's generally going to be a 4X, with "maybe" a 6X being a consideration. If I need more than that in a fixed power scope, I'm jumping straight past the 8X and moving into some serious power, like my 24X (and even 36X) stuff, with nothing lower than about 12X if I'm mounting it on something that needs more than the low end (4X) scopes.
It just always seemed stuck in the middle, an uneasy compromise that didn't serve any purpose well enough to justify it's other restrictions. I could never find it's niche, so away it went.

was thinking of putting it on my v match coyote killin ar.
it currently wers a bushnell 10x, and on close in shots, was about almost too much magnification.
so was thinking a straight 6x on long shots is too little, and 10x was about right, but close in the 6x worked great but the 10x was mostly hair ! so an 8 splits the diff., and may work great ?
old eyes and picking fur up in the sage is hard sometimes, so more power is nice..

If you're trying to cover that range of magnification, I'd be looking at finding a 4.5-14X instead.
The 8X is just a weak compromise at best. I'm doubting you'd be happy for long with it...

Thinking that a current production 3-9 will outshine the old 8 in more than a few ways.

I have 3 of them plus 1, 7.5 AO 1, 7.5 Non AO and a 10X AO and like them all. Simple and stout, clear optics.

M8s in any X are great scopes. 3,4, 6, 7.5, 10, 12 they just work AND they always get fixed FREE ! Variables just have more parts to fail and 99% of people who use them never change the X in real world hunting situations.
I buy everyone I run across. Have a NIB M8 6X with CH & dot. Mounted it in Burris plastic insert rings and it will never be sold. Slim, light, great optics and once sighted in it never moves POI.

I've run an older M8 in 4, 6, 10, and 12.
Their optics don't compare to a new VX II, maybe even a 2009 VX-I series. I do prefer fixed power, but they need to update the series.
