Hey Guys,
I'm taking my boy(15) and one of his friends that we put through hunter training for a long weekend turkey/bear hunt this weekend. I want to do this as a trial run for spike camp this fall.
I have a Integral Designs Siltarp 3 10'x 12' that i want us to sleep under. I haven't slept under just a tarp before so any suggestions on set up or better yet pics would be awesome.
We are staying at a truck accessible lake in the valley bottom so I thought it would be a perfect way to test the new set up and a few other new pieces of gear.
Thanks,
Koot

I have not worked with that tarp but I imagine a basic lean to or standard A frame would work best

They have a pic in there catalogue that I was going to try. It looks like a lean too with the side;s staked down. If I use my trekking poles then it seems to me that I could adjust the height for good or bad weather.
pics are always worth a thousand words though!
I have neen mulling over the idea of adding a small tarp to the front of the lean too if it snows a lot this weekend.....its dumping out as I type!
Thanks

Here's a video I did that includes two different ways to pitch a tarp in the Flying A configuration. That would be in Trail Ready episode 1. In the next episode I have coming out shortly (episode 3)I will be demonstrating a modified version of a leanto that is much more storm worthy.

My feeling is 10x12 will be tight quarters if you attempt to do anything other than an A-frame.

This is a 12x16 pitched as a half pyramid. The peak height is 8 ft. It was good for two. Not all gear fit inside. We had another tarp we used as a gear shed. It is relatively storm proof when buttoned up. A 9x12 can be pitched the same way which results in a peak height of 6 ft and would probably be comfortable for a couple of boys but I wouldn't want to join them.

Here is setting up our breakaway tarp as a three sided shelter. Granted it's shaped a bit for the three sided setup

That's a stove that I built. It has some unique features differentiate it from other stoves that are available. For one there is an internal baffle alluded to by WW here in the homemade stove thread. Version 2 may be available for sale if I can get funding for the first run.

We backpacked in. The stove and shelter currently come in around 9 lbs. The 4 season Walrus expedition tent I used to use, before I switched to tarps, weighed in just over 10 lbs. My tarp is also part of my packing system so I'm able to drop 5+ lbs of packbag also.

Here's a look at what the baffle does to the heat profile of the stove. Notice that the heat is primarily in the front of the stove and the super heated zone directly under the pot.

Just got back yesterday and had a great time. I have to get my daughter to show me how to upload pics first to the computer, then to the forum.
Only saw one Turkey....... but a pile of Elk and Deer.
The Tarp worked well. It didn't snow as it was threatening so we didn't get to try it in any precip.
I'll try to post pics later today.

Not sure if this will work but this is what we usually take on hunts.

koot, if you want to make a link to a jpg file, click 'Reply' (not Quick Reply) and you will see a hyperlink at the bottom of the Reply screen which says 'File Manager'. Click 'File Manager' and then click the 'Browse' button. You can then browse your computer's file tree, find and select the pic you want to upload. Then click the 'Add file' button and it will upload. You can repeat browsing and adding files for several pics, or just one if you like. When you have finished adding all the files you want to, click the 'Done adding files' button. That will make a hyperlink to the pic(s).

The other way to do it is to open a photo sharing account with a service like photobucket and link it with the [img][/img] tags to your reply. For instance, lets say your photo in photobucket has a web address of http://www.photobucket.com/koot's_pic.jpg
then you just insert or copy that address into the image tags like so:

[img]http://www.photobucket.com/koot's_pic.jpg[/img]

Since this isn't a true valid web address, you don't actually see an image, but you do see the proper syntax that would show an image if the address were valid.

Hope this helps.

Finally got Trail Ready Episode 3 done. The second segment is me demonstrating a modified lean-to pitch with an 8x10 tarp. Trail Ready Episode 3
